I am thinking about biking to work.   What tips can you offer me to help my ride and the clean up when i get to work.  I guess the basics.
thanks in advance

Figure out where you're going to keep your bike at work, and ideally where you can shower/clean up. Also, I find it a lot more comfortable when I bring in a bag full of supplies the day before, so that I don't have to ride with a big backpack. Finally, try to figure out the safest route to work, even if it's not the shortest - extra distance is just extra training.

oneword - 2006-04-26 11:42 AM  I've been doing for three years nearly every day of the workweek. 24 mile roundtrip. In fact, I was just interviewed by our local newspaper about my bike commuting, so this is a timely thread.

Semi-Hi-Jack:  Scott,  Do you ride a 'beater" bike to work or your good road bike?

It all depends

How far is your ride?  will you be to hammering or cruising to get there?  If it's an easy, short ride, you can get dressed at home - be sure to put a gaiter or rubber band or something around your pant lets.  Looks goofy, but less so than grease stains on your good clothes.

Are there showers at/near your workplace? - is there a healthclub nearby with a locker room?

Do you have an office with a door? - if there's no shower, then you can strip down in your office and clean up with wet wipes. Were will you keep your bike/clothes?

Pick your route carefully - are their quieter streets parallel to your route?  I go a couple of miles further than necessary to avoid traffic.
