sorry to disappear on y'all ...

I noticed that when I would get on the computer at home 45-60 min would fly by with nothing getting done.   But I've been training every day, I"m within a few pounds of not being a clyde for the first time in 10 years, and training everyday..

work has gotten back to it's normal pace so hopefully I"ll check in more

Shoe life for me is about 350-400 miles. There is a very specific feeling I get in my left knee that tells me it's time to change shoes. I have been using the same brand (asics) and model (kayano gels) for the last three years, so I'm very predictable. I also use the gear tracker on this site to get a general idea of when to order (on-line) so I'm without an excuse to run.

Just came back from the Dr.  and found out I either have bronchitis or walking pneumonia. Either way I have been told to get bed rest. Not happy. Cry

3K race this morning, frustrating due to number of people on tight short course.

Met goals - Under 21 - 20:44.4

No walking

So it is a good day.

Sorry to hear this.  Keep up your spirits, use the time to plan your workouts or mentally run some races in your head to improve.

Get well soon Twink!  I came down with bronchitis about 4 weeks before my HIM last year. Let it heal or it just continues!

New 5k PR for me this weekend. 23:43!!  I finished 5th overall and won my AG!

I am still here, and I guess it is my turn to ask a question.

I want to work to be able to run the 5K after the bike ride.  Should I be trying to go longer distances at a slower pace or staying at the 5K distance but with a faster pace to build endurance?

Also congratulations on your PR.  I am trying for a 5K 30s and 40s PR on 3/15.  I turn 50 on 3/19, so I will run one soon after that to establish my 50s mark.

Bummer...

went in to check out my knee today... doctor said an MCL strain... 6 weeks off... no swim, no bike, no run... maybe I'll do some weight lifting or something.

Sorry to hear that! Injuries are really frustrating. The one thing someone told me when I first hurt my foot that did help was 6 weeks is a very short amount of time in the grand scheme of things...take the time to heal so when you are better - you are ready to go!

Based on my extremely limited experience - I would go longer at slower paces. I have been following BarryP's 3:2:1 plan (three times a week you run a distance of 1, twice a week you run a distance at 2 and once a week you run a distance of three - so for this week, I'm running 3.75 miles MWF, 7.5 miles T Th and 11.25 miles on Saturday at a pace that I feel I could keep running after the end of the run). It is truly one of the best plans I have used - mostly because it has brought the joy back to running for me - it is really easy to crank out the short runs (because they are so short), and the medium and long runs are at an easy pace so you feel good throughout. There have been two benefits for me: 1) the long runs don't hurt. You have so much mileage built up that it isn't hard. I don't hobble around after they are over and I can have a normal day and 2) the slow pace is getting faster the longer I do this plan. I don't have time to find the link right now - but I know I pointed to it in an earlier post. It really is a good one.

Injuries and set backs SUCK! But she's right. If we dont let them heal PROPERLY (my issue), then we'll be setting ourselves up for another setback sooner then we think.

My calf is still is angry with me, but I'm finding ways to fill the running void. It appears my second attempt at a HM will not be happening in April. BUT I WILL DO ONE THIS YEAR! Just not at the expesne of screwing up my calf even worse then it has been. Besides, I got my 'A' race training to start in a few weeks and that's my bigger priority.

Train smart and make it fun!

Well, I have returned from El Salvador. I did not get a bit of training in - unless you count some short hikes that left me waaay more winded than I would have liked. I am chalking it up to the heat.

Been sick the last few days, but I think I will be able to get back to the gym tonight. Really excited for it. Have a 5k this weekend to prep for.

Bummer to hear about all the injuries thsi group is facing!  Let them heal or you will be battling them much longer than you woud like. MCL, calf strains, shoulder, foot injuries, I think we have it covered!

As far as running off the bike, I would definately start running more endurance runs, I think the key to to learn to run on tired legs. It usually takes me a 1/2 mile or so to get my run legs back after a bike, and that first 1/2 mile is hard!!!

Hey all. I'd like to echo that bit of encouragment. Let our setbacks heal, but continue on your path to your goals. For me, my running will come back, to that I'm sure, but in the mean time, I can still kick on the bike and swim as far as I need to. I'll keep up with using the eliptical and hiking to try and simulate leg endurance the best I can. It cant compare, but it keeps me motovated to get me back to the point I want to be.

This year will be my Oly and HM. And if I can find one, an open water swim of 2 miles. Keep going, stay motovated, and above all else... please forgive my spelling (BT really needs spell check - lol).

Have a great weekend all!

Hello Everyone! Sorry to hear about all the injuries in the group. Hopefully everyone will recuperate sooner than expected.

On a different note.... I completed my first triathlon (400m, 11km, 5km) today Laughing

Cold day but it didn't rain so I was more than happy. What an amazing feeling to finish.

WOOT WOOT WOOT!

New 5K PR for me this morning! 30:34 down from 32:11 last time. I really didn't think I was going to manage to go faster - the first race was flat the whole way, this was all hills! I had to stop and walk twice just to get my breath back, and I dragged myself over the line. But it was super fun! And I've been feeling really jazzed all day today afterwards, even though I had to go into work! I think I got more done in 8hrs today than I did in 40hrs all last week. Amazing.

Lesson - I need to get up and run early instead of my evening runs.

Reality - ..... probably not going to happen I have such a close relationship with the snooze button....

Thats great Twink! I recall my first last year - what an event, what an accomplishment. Congrats on reaching your goal! Take a little bit and bask in what you've done.

Great news! So glad you went out and completed your first Twink - and on the heels of bronchitis none the less. Great job and i'm really happy you had fun.

And about that 5K PR/morning run...great job as well...looks like the training is paying off. I have a love/hate relationship with the morning run. I love to have it done for the day by the time the kids get up to go to school, but I hate getting out of bed. Especially when it's dark and cold. It's easier for me in the summer (starting in April, it will start getting light outside around 5am), but definitely a struggle right now.

I hope everyone else is doing well...I managed to only drop one workout last week (family stuff really does cut into my training time ;-)...and am ever hopeful that I will be able to complete all my workouts this week.

PR's are awesome!  Way to go!  I like hitting the snooze alot also, but I got to say, there is something about an early morning run that is peaceful, and when I get my workout out of the way early, the rest of my day falls into place!

Way to go on the PR and especially after your vacation!!! The morning hours aren't that bad once you get used to them.

I am running a half marathon this weekend and I am not feeling too confident about it. I did this race two years ago and finished in 1:56. So now, Of course I want a sub 2 hour half, but I have not been training for a half. I have been training for an Olympic triathlon!  My longest run to date is 9 miles, sooooo i am just not sure how I will approach this race...
