Pre-race routine:

Partied till 1am that morning. Thought twice (really about 30 times) about even showing up. Got there right as the swimmers were putting in.

DNF the swim and dropped. Panicked about 50 yards into the swim. Hung on to one of the kayaks then swam to shore. The darkness of the river unsettled me too much. Must do some lake swimming before trying this again.
