Subject: What's the difference between DB Squats and DB deadlifts?

Hi. I have never been much of a strength training perwson but this year I thought i would add a routine to my regimine. What I was looking for was a routine that I can pretty much do anywhere. I found this routine that uses only doumbells which I think is great.

http://www.building-muscle101.com/dumbbell-workout-routine.html

However in this routine it shows DB Deadlift and DB Squat exercise. I looked at the two and they look the same to me. Can someone explain to me what the difference is between them?

Also, one of the exercies is called a DB stiff-legged deadlift. I tried this but I do have very tight hamstrings and this was very uncomfortable to do. Can someone suggest a substitute?

Thanks all.

For me dumbells are a much safer option, it is amazingly easy to injure your back doing either squats or deadlifts with a barbell , even with slightly bad form.

Deadlifts will focus on the back of your legs, lower back, butt, etc. Squats will work your entire leg.

I cant stand stiff leg deadlifts, for the novice they can lead to serious injury. Bending at the knees and not locking out on the way up or down will save you a back injury along wih not going down too far. The added weight will pull you down further than you would normally go taking away leverage and putting your back at risk.

If you are looking for a distinct different movement still using dumb bells you might try a "goblet squat". This is when you hold one dumb bell close to your chest and squat. It more resembles a front squat and targets the quads. I have found it easier on my lower back and a different feel than the dead lift. I agree with the previous poster about injuries if you are not careful. Try having someone look at your form before you go too heavy.

To answer the original question, no. However, deadlifts should always go neutral whether performed with db or a bar. Neutral means with the weight at temporary rest on the floor. But otherwise it is the same movement. I don't like dumbbell square. The promote poor form, especially when you are doing significant weight, it actually resemble a deadlift, imagine that. Instead do db deadliest and go neutral. And if you must use dumbbells to train your legs, do lunges. You get more bang for the weight.

As for bars being more dangerous that is absolutely false. You may prefer db, but I prefer bars and find the opposite of your statement. I find people execute poor form more frequent with bars, as I stated above regarding db square.

Stiff legged deeds should never ever be done in my opinion. The risk of injury far outweighs the benefit. First off it is a hamstring movement. Second the squat and standard deadliest work the lower back just as effectively and are safer movements.

I don't know about how to best execute them with dumbells (as opposed to barbells), but there is a difference in the bottom position of a squat and deadlift.   The squat is deeper, with the hips ending below the knee at the bottom of the movement.  In the deadlift, the hips are farther back and shoulders farther forward, but the knee angle doesn't close quite as much as it does in the squat (the hip remains a little above the knee)

Hey all. Thanks for the replies. I went down to my gym today and asked on of the trainers to demonstrate the two. I think I have a better understand of them now. I can see real potential of injury trying to do those deadlifts. I think I will look for something else to do for the hammys. Maybe just stretching for now.

Yes the key difference is the bottom position, neutral for dead. And hips forward at the top. But, dumbbells allow the hips to go to far forward without a counter balance. If you don't know what I mean I can try to explain. But the bar being in front only allows the hips so far. And the bar will pull your body forward. Dumbbells allow you to lean back enough were the dumbbells will be beside or even behind your hips pulling you upper body into a hyper extension. Again increasing the risk of injury. So with dumbbells dead, it is recommended you not throw hips forward, or do it minimally.
