Seriously.....if there are 100 people in the country over 40 that are currently swimming sub 5:10 I would be surprised.

This makes it human.  Winning the TdF seven times in a row, that's superhuman.  This very subtle, well-crafted distinction made for some solid entertainment.

The most shocking thing I learned in this thread is that Craig Alexander evidently has the same training regimen as Cadel Evans, Michael Phelps and Ryan Hall.......combined.  No wonder I am fat and slow.

Seriously.....if there are 100 people in the country over 40 that are currently swimming sub 5:10 I would be surprised.  Fewer still the number of those that took 20 years off of the sport.  Fewer still that are also riding and running regularly.  There might be tons of inactive former college swimmers that are ABLE to swim that fast, if they put in a big training regimen, but the reality is most are done with swimming.

5:10 on 500 yards is not that rare.  I think you'd be surprised how many quality masters swimmers are out there.  I agree it's not likely for people who took 20 years off from the sport, but many stick with it at the club level.

In high school our top guys were swimming 100y free in the sub :50 range.  One was in the :45 range, and even faster in college.  He still swims (I'm 38, he's 41).

I think considering that he's a triathlete and therefore doesn't know how to do a flip turn, those are pretty smoking times.

Seriously though, I somehow managed to catch the broadcast for the Xterra championship - That dude is a serious athlete. 5th out of the water, and he led the whole thing for a good portion of the bike, but took a spill and bonked his head. They weren't too specific about it, and he *did* keep going, but apparently he was woozy enough that he stopped gunning. He still managed to place 23rd. Take bad luck out of the equation and guy was contending for the win. At 40. AFTER his supposed 'peak'. Not too shabby.

I agree. I think he got passed before he wrecked though...

"and, yes, there are plenty of 40 year olds doing 5:08s."

Sure, but how many of them can bike and run like him.
