I thought this was interesting.  Lance Armstrong swam the 500 Yard Freestyle at the
Longhorn Aquatics 2012 New Year's Classic. 4:59.99 was his seed time and he went 5:08.11. Pretty darn good.

The man can swim.  He proved that at Utah this year.

heis just an athletic freak. he can run, he can swim, and you know he can bike. Makes you wonder what he could have done in triathalon if he decided to go for that instead of cylcing and TdF

The best thing about this swim, and what we can all take away, is that he is only super human on the bike.

On his Twitter feed, he called it "five minutes and 8 seconds of torture."  He also posted, "In honor of all the 16yr olds who kicked my [butt] yesterday I had to watch Sixteen Candles with my kids last night."

He is fast.  Wish I could swim that fast!

Last year, I heard he swam a 1.2 mile OWS in like 48-49 minutes, something like that.  It would be fun to see him in an IM race, get off the bike in the lead, then see who can run him down on the run.

I believe he is in the nearest lane here.  I'd like to see the whole race though.

No way he swam 1.2 miles that slowly. He was a former US champion in Triathlon with a strong swimming background.

Doh, I meant 2.4 miles, the same as the full iron swim distance.  Duh.....thanks for catching that.

Unless you compare him to other triathletes which is what he trains for right now....then he is back to super human status.

Not too many 40yo triathletes swimming those times.

This wasn't a triathlon. It was a USAS swim meet. And, yes, there are plenty of 40 year olds doing 5:08s.  It's still a great time, however.

I said he was a triathlete and he trains like a triathlete....Just because he was at a swim meet doesn't mean he's a swimmer. I did a swim meet a couple weeks ago...I could careless how my times compared to other swimmers at the meet. I care how my times compare to other triathletes....as does he because that is the sport we are doing.

and no....there are not "plenty" of 40yo COMPETITIVE TRIATHLETES swimming 5:08's for 500 free.

Oh...you mean people don't enjoy watching someone ride a bike by themselves for 4+ hours?

For one thing, he wouldn't be a multi-millionaire if he had pursued professional triathlon instead of cycling.

Um, if you are at a swim meet, you are a swimmer.   If you are at a track meet or a road race, you are a runner and if you are at a bike race, you are a biker.  Many of the triathletes I train with also swim competitively at meets and we race as swimmers not triathletes versus swimmers.  I'm not sure why you'd go to a swim meet and only compare yourself to triathletes, but I guess it does narrow the field and make you feel better about yourself, who knows, very odd.

And, FYI, if you are going to take the time to register and train and compete in a USAS meet, YOU ARE A SWIMMER, especially in Austin where there are scads of incredibly talented and awesome USMS teams and events.

Stick to what you know, or don't know.
