Subject: Runner hit by car during race

Tragic accident in Missouri happened the other when a runner in a 10k race was hit by a car. As I understand the story, it was made clear that tha roads were not going to be closed, but the family is upset (understandably so) and saying there was not enough done to ensure the safety of the runners.

How much can the sponsors do to ensure the safety of the runners besides shutting down the roads? I have no idea why the roads were not closed and the family is saying they knew the roads were not closed but they are upset that there was no police prescence. In my experience, no clsed roads = no police prescence.

Hopefully the injured runner heals quickly.

Here is the link to the story:

well if that story has its facts straight and the event organizers didn't pull a permit for the city that requires one, they are in for a long fight.

I've only had 1 road race with closed roads. A Susan B. Komen race. Most of ours, the roads are open, but police are there at the intersections to stop traffic creating a rolling closure. Once the race opens up, cars can go across. If a car is behind the pack, a sag wagon police car prevents then from getting through the races.

If the organizers did fail to get a permit, that's a HUGE oversight. They'll get whacked and deservedly so.

This is awfull all around. My heart *first* and *foremost* goes out to the runner and his family.

MO Running is right down the street from my house. These runs are very low key and they do one about once a month. You can see the cones they set up throughout the course. The runs seem to be more of a runners community monthly run than some big racing event. Everyone knows the roads are not blocked, etc...

The guys at the store are great - real runners who will do anything to help you out and get folks running. I'm sure they are devistated and I hope they don't get vilified for this.

I my mind they were not grossly neglegent (based on my limited knowledge of the incedent). It was an accident and this could have happened to any of us out on a group/fun run. Yes, it was orgainized by a business. But, as I said, they are very clear about the parameters of the runs.

Be carefull out there.

This is sad news, I hope the runner will be ok. I cant believe that they would hold a race without some type of road closure or police presence.
