Hey guys!

I'm trying to help a friend just staring out but I'm stymied on the swimwear issue. Right now he's wearing boardshorts and a tshirt. That's a lot of drag in the water. I'd like to find him some kind of jammers at least, but Speedo and TYR don't go up to his size.

Is there another company or a website I could send him to that carries jammers above a size 40?

Thanks!

Fox

I was in the same boat, I ended up buying the largest size of a few different shorts.  The one I like best is the 2XU tri short.  The 2X size fits me fine, 5'10" 270lbs.   It's a good compromise between a full swim jammer and a bike short since the chamois isn't as thick, it's also not too bad to run in.  I guess that's why it's a tri short.  I bought mine from Amazon.

I also swim in a neoprene short I found at Wal-Mart, it is a "Gold's Gym" branded short.  It's not really sold as a swim short, but I figure it should be fine since wetsuits are made of the same thing.  The large is a bit big for me.  The added buoyancy is noticeable and it keeps my hips higher in the water.

I'll second the 2XU tri shorts.. they are great to swim in.

BUT

chlorine destroys Lycra.. they will not last if you are swimming a lot.

This is an Australian company that I have used.. their gear is pretty good.

these are jammer style shorts that go up to 8XL !!

I just went through this exact same issue, decided that I wanted to look like I knew how to swim as oppose to looking like I was on vacation and doing some laps. I looked on swimoutlet.com like most, but ultimately I found a local swim & run shop that carried a brand name Dolfin. The gal there told me that there aren't many brands out there that run up into the 38 & 40 sizes. I bought a pair for training and absolutely LOVE them!! They are polyester so they'll handle the chlorine well and contrary to most people I don't feel like they're too firm. Although I haven't tried on the lycra blend style which are suppose to be more forgiving. Any who if your looking on shaving some time off your 100 sprints or your long swims I'd highly recommend them. I seriously noticed a two minute improvement in my 1000 yard long swim and I shaved almost 5 seconds, consistently off my 100yard sprints.

PS: She also states that the jammers will get bigger about 1/2 a size once they are wet. I didn't notice, they still fit snug to me.

Hey guys/gals. I have read this thread and it made me realize that could use another suit to trian in and and I would like to try a better swim suit. I have currently been wearing running type shorts with a draw string and liner in them. The Jammers sound like a good training/extra suit.

This leads me to a simple question. Do the jammers have a liner in them or are they more like bike shorts without the padding. The reason I ask is that I have found some jammers on ebay, but also found a pair of compression base layer shorts that look like the jammers that are cheaper. The compression shorts says they are made out of Lycra Compression Fabric Blend of Nylon, Polyester and Elastane.

Are they the same thing? Will these work.

Thanks

The jammers I bought don't have a liner per se, but the design has a bit of support built into it for us guys, if that makes any sense. I guess your could say they're like bike shorts without padding, but a much thinner material. If your planning on training a lot in a pool the general consensus is to go with an all polyesther material. It just handles the chlorine better. I'm not sure how much cheaper the compression shorts you found were, but if your plans are to swim a lot in the pool then your going to save a bit in the long run by staying with a polyesther jammer that'll out live the Lycra blend short. Some say the polyesther jammers aren't a stretchy, but I haven't noticed. It'll be a nice change from the running shorts you have been using.

The jammers I bought a year or so ago have an extra layer of fabric in the front that works as a sort of liner but it's not a full liner like in running shorts etc.

I burned through 3 tri suits in the pool and decided to just practice with the drag wearing speedo swim TRUNKS (no banana hammock for me). Even Jammers would get trashed fairly soon.

I bought several pair of the jammers from swimoutlet in size 40,  they  seem to do well and held up to the chlorine in a pool.  Pretty close to size.

Make way for SHAMU!!  At 6'2", 350 lbs, and a 48" waist I had the same problem.  I found decent looking boxer style swim shorts at "skinzwear dot com".  Look for style M43.  They come in sizes up to XXXL.  I felt a little self-conscious appearing in public in them but I sucked it up because I wanted to swim, not drag a pair of board shorts through the water.  Funny thing, nobody at the YMCA was staring, pointing or laughing.

This year I bought a Pearl izumi XXL tri suit.  one piece used for all three disciplines.  I'm 5'9" around 260.  It fits very well, and I'm super happy with it...

mpento17, YOU just became my latest hero!

A - I loved the fact that I didn't have to live with Henry Ford's idea of choice (any color you want, as long as it's black).

B - In their world, a XXL is not for 36-38 inch waists.  I'm actually only a XXL according to them, at a 48" waist.  I know where I will be buying my tri shorts now.

Thanks.

I also have the Pearl Izumi XXL Tri suit. I am a bit bigger to, 6' & 275, a bit tight in the chest but still fits / works fine.
