I've signed up for my first 70.3 in April and am trying to determine if I should invest in a wetsuit. The H2O temp should be around 74 F. There are so many choices; which would you recommend? Also, sleeveless or with sleeves? Is bouyancy the same? I've thought about renting one for the HIM but I have decided to participate in 6 sprints during the summer, so I'm considering buying one.

Thanks.

You certainly don't need a wetsuit at 74 degrees.

But, it will make you faster.  In terms of speed, there isn't much difference between sleeved and sleeveless.  The former is a bit warmer, of course.

If the sprints will be wetsuit legal and you want to wear a wetsuit for the sprints, then yes, buying is smarter than renting.

Some might say that a wetsuit isn't worth the trouble for a sprint.  Not true.  With practice, you can remove a wetsuit in 10-20 seconds.  You will save more than that in just about any swim.

if you can wear a wetsuit you should, but make sure you get some practice in it before hand so its not a foreign device, wetsuits are your friend they help, Sleeved is better in my opinion, and you rarely see any elites wearing sleeveless so there must be something to it. you can always try renting one and then decide to purchase it later, most of the renting programs allow the rental fee to go toward the purchase of the wetsuit afterwards if you like you.
