Swim
  • 13m 7s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was harder than I expected, not due to distance but all of the "other" variables, which I had read about but not experienced. All the things I read which said "you won't understand until you do it" were true; the constricted lungs in cold water, the kicks in the face, grabbing-at-my-ankles stuff. Frankly, it was like a battle royale in the water. None of it intentional, mind you, but still pretty physical. It was just hard to get into my rhythm until about 200 m in, and then we got to the buoy, everyone got packed together making the turn, and it started again. Still, it was a great learning experience, and I did OK, just a couple minutes slower than my best pool times. Hopefully I'll be more prepared next time.

What would you do differently?:

RELAX and swim more confidently. Oh, and wear goggles that don't fog at 25m!
Transition 1
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

Not bad for 1st tri, but I can make up a lot of ground here. Speed laces may help
What would you do differently?:

Um, everything FASTER.
Bike
  • 45m 16s
  • 12.8 miles
  • 16.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Road bike worked very well. I felt strongest during the climbs, but my times weren't as competitive as they were in the other 2 events. Of course, I spent the least time training on the bike, so now I know where to direct more energy in the future.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice more on the bike. Also, I held myself back to "save up" for the run. In hindsight, I could have put more effort in.
Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

I have clips, so it was a no-brainer.
What would you do differently?:

NOt much. Pretty fast for me.
Run
  • 23m 26s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

NOt as fast as my usual 5k, but I'm pretty happy with it.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster (duh!). I need to do more intervals.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked. Ate some bananas.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I held back too much, in fear of the second bike-run set. Oh, and I was not as well prepard for all the "other" stuff of the OWS. I'll be better next time.

Event comments:

I'd give it a 5, but I only have a sample size of 1.

Overall, I was happy with how I did. Again, I didn't do this to be competitive, but I ended up placing 5th in the Novice division. My times would have put me MOP with my age group (30-35), but to be fair, I may have benefitted from starting last in terms of the swim start not being as aggressive. The main thing for me was I finished the whole thing without stopping, walking, doggy-paddling, etc. Now, on to Mistletoe!

Thanks! It was good to see you on the course. Maybe I'll show up to Mistletoe with a BT tattoo!

Your finishing time was the same as mine last year('05) plus two extra transitions- good job. The first race is always a learning experience so you should be pumped, you will definately drop some time off next race simply because you'll know what it feels like. Congrats, and good luck.

Wow! Awesome first race! I had clips too. For all my envying people their clipless pedals, I wouldn't have traded my toe clips in for most anything at Ft. Yargo. They really helped with transitions. BTW, you smoked the run.

Wow...nice race!  Especially for the first one.  You'll be burning up the field in future races :-)

You all are too kind. Thanks for the encouragement. I am SO glad I had toe clips. T1 though was horrednously slow. The problem is that I like to wear socks, and a shirt that doesn't drag (Nike compression shirts - hold the fat in too), but putting them on is tough. I thought about swimming in the shirt, but I have an ultrajohn wetsuit and was worried that it would screw up the seal around the arms.

Any tips to get a shirt on faster, especially since Mistletoe likely will be warm enough to not wear a wetsuit?

you could get a one piece tri suit or a tri top that you wear the whole race. They will rub you raw so train with them to get used to it and break them in.
