Pre-race routine:

Had an egg and cheese bagel with water at 7am. I drank some coconut water about an hour before the race. It's just a fun 5k so I didn't do anything special.

Comments:

Oh...5k's are my nemesis! I'm much more of an endurance racer and don't like the uncomfortable feeling straight out the gate. I went out at a quick pace to get away from most of the people and got about 5:50 for the first mile but my pace dropped after that. Two of my friends were in front of me until one of them slowed a little and he stuck at my back until the end. I don't have a kick and he flew right past me at the finish line! All in good fun :)

I don't think I'll be doing any more 5k's, maybe except for this particular race every year since it's the first race back to racing for me after 9 years. It was a good day with good friends...just how I like it!

Oh yeah, not including my teenage years, this is a PR for me!
What would you do differently?:

Well, if I do another 5k I may try to actually pace it starting with a 6:15mi instead of 5:xx. I tend to fade really bad in the last mile, so maybe that will help.
Post race
Warm down:

Hmm...a small cup of Guiness and taking some photos :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not completely rested for this race, last monday was one of my 20 milers and I had a VO2max and tempo workout during the week. Not sure how much faster I can go if fresh though.

Event comments:

I like this race and will probably do it annually. A bunch of people in my Facebook fitness group do it too and I enjoy being there to watch them finish especially when this is a first 5k for some of them.

Hey there, thanks for the post to my RR.  You had a pretty impressive 5K youself.  And it's funny to see that you weren't entirely happy with your performance.  Dude, your times were really impressive and you have a PR to boot!  I'd say thats a "win".  You'll have to come up to the 8K with me next year!

Thanks Eddie!  Oh, I'm quite happy...finally got that sub 20 that's been eluding me.  But, I have to say I did try even pacing at the Shamrock Shuffle last weekend and it works out much better.  We'll see if I graduate to the 8k next year  Only reason I haven't yet is because this race is a little sentimental to me since it's my first race coming back to running after 9 years of nada!
