Age Group Rank = 1/5
Pre-race routine:

Got to race about 6:30. It was still FRICKING COLD! My car thermometer showed 41 degrees. Ate half a bagel, a banana and then set up the T1 area. After that I jogged for about 10 minutes to try to get warm and think about what to wear on the bike since it was sure to be cold. Decided on a like jacket. Then put on the wetsuit and went down to the water for a pre-swim to get used to the cold conditions.
Event warmup:

I jogged for about 10 minutes. Then went down to the water for a pre-swim to get used to the cold conditions. That was cold! But I adjusted and was ready for the start.
Swim
  • 27m 47s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a cold, cold swim. Even with earplugs and a neoprene cap I was very dizzy. When I got out of the water I could hardly stand. But it was a solid swim for me and I just plugged along at a steady pace
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little better drafting...or enter a race later in the year so its warmer.
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

Very difficult transition. I was so dizzy I nearly knocked over my bike. I had to sit down to remove my wetsuit as I couldn't stand. I put on a light jacket which slowed me down as well. As it was, I had to take it easy because I was all over due to vertigo.
What would you do differently?:

Not get dizzy?
Bike
  • 1h 19m 25s
  • 24 miles
  • 18.13 mile/hr
Comments:

Needed more hill training coming in. But it was so cold my feet were absolutely numb. I don't wear socks and my tri shoes are open, so it was just brutally cold on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Hill training
Transition 2
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

My feet were absolutely numb. I couldn't feel them when I got off the bike. My toes were completely dead.
What would you do differently?:

Shoe covers?
Run
  • 47m 23s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Tough run, but I got through it.
What would you do differently?:

More hill training.

Warm down:

Just wandered around, eating, drinking

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Skill and training.

Course: Very hilly run. There was an early hill but then mostly downhill on the out part of the course. And we got all the major climbs on the way back. When I left T2, but feet felt so blocky when I started running that I actually thought for a moment that I forgot to change out of my cycling shoes and I looked down to see what I was wearing. It got warmer and I finally started to feel OK at the 3.1 mile turn-around. Finished with a strong 2nd half run.
