Total Time = 1h 04m 43s
Overall Rank = 2/246
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 1/23
Pre-race routine:

Got to the race sight very early, got a great spot in transition. Picked up race packet, saw they seeded me 36th for the swim. I was 11th last year. I figured there must be a lot of fast swimmers this year. I had been working on my swimming this winter/spring and thought I might be seeded higher.
Event warmup:

Warm up run down the road a little more than 1/2 mile and back. Arrived back at transition with one minute to spare. Jumped in the pool and did two warm up laps then cued up.
Swim
  • 07m 8s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

I wanted to to see how my extra swim training paid off, hoping to get a little closer to the front of the pack, well turns out I took a dump in my pants instead. :29 slower than last year. I felt like my effort was strong, I passed two people and got passed by one. I did not time myself so I must go off there time.
What would you do differently?:

The more I think about it the more I think there is an error in timing. I have to let it go.
Transition 1
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Quick transition, very simple
Bike
  • 37m
  • 14 miles
  • 22.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a problem getting on the bike and feet into shoes but then I dropped the hammer. I figured there was approx. 35 people in front of me. Started picking them off very quickly. So quick I lost count. Good news, there are two turnarounds so before I made it to the first I counted lead riders, at this point there was eight.I caught two more before the second turnaround and two more on the way back in.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice bike mount and feet into shoes.
Transition 2
  • 00m 29s
Comments:

quick and simple
Run
  • 19m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Gina confirmed, I had four people in front of me. Legs were working great, turnover was great, felt strong. I was on a mission to catch one or two or at least close the gap. Made the turn on Camino Del Mar I could see one guy 150 yds ahead. I set my sights. At the turn around I was :20 seconds back, felt like I was closing the distance but then this kid in baggy shorts and a baggy teeshirt came out of nowhere, he was right on my tail. Then at the bottom of the hill he passed me. I knew I had to try to keep pace with him but he was a bit faster than me. The rest of the race nothing changed. I was not gaining or loosing ground on the #3 guy and thats how we finished. Turns out this kid was part of a relay team so he didn't matter.
What would you do differently?:

Last years pace was 6:30 per mile this year 6:17

Event comments:

I cut 1 min 13 sec from last years over all time, but got beat by 3 min 13 sec. I did retain my age group crown for the second year in a row. I also learned a valuable lesson today about confidence. I need to bring it with me. I allowed doubt to creep in when I looked at my seeding for the swim and that is not the way to compete. Thank you G. your the best
