Anybody here ride chamoisless? And how far if you do? Is it me or does the chamois seem to just get uncomfortable after a while, even with plenty of butt butter. I've tried thick a chamois, super thin ones, and everything in between and they all get uncomfotable. I have gone out in lycra minus the chamois and was fine, but it was for a short stint so I do not know how many miles my sit bones will take without it. Maybe I am better off without it?

I personally cannot ride without one. What kind of saddle do you have? Maybe your saddle provides enough comfort for you and to have extra (chamois) is maybe just annoying to your sit bones. I always look at Chamois as sitting on your saddle with a pillow as opposed to sitting on your saddle with nothing at all. I can't go a mile on my bike without a chamois, but I also thik it has something to do with the saddle I have....I don't know

I started wearing tri shorts to bike in.  They are less bulky and much more comfortbale than bike shorts.  Plus it's always good to get used to riding in them since that's what I wear for races.

Have you tried wearing tri shorts??

Yup, I tried the tri shorts even tri suits. Still gets uncomfy on a long ride. What I noticed is that at the beginning of my season when I haven't been on the bike I like the thick chamois, and as my sit bones get used to being in the saddle I prefer the thinner chamois. Now I may lean toward none at all.

If you can get away with no chamois then go for it!  I personally can't ride without a chamois- especially for long rides.  If your butt starts hurting and you don't want to wear a chamois, you can always get a seat cover.  I have a QR one that works well and is comfortable.

Maybe I'll try a seat cover.

I'd be completely OK doing shorter rides (less than 90 minutes) with out bike or tri shorts. It's nice because then I can just wear a swim suit if I want for a sprint tri. I have learned that even on long ride, I prefer a much much thinner chamois. If going without works for you, then go for it!

I was looking at sprint and olympic distance. I should be ok without one. Maybe a HIM but I'll have to do a long ride and see how that feels.

My bike shorts had a chamois that was very uncomfortable for me, so I'd been riding with regular shorts, but I do have a gel seat.  I did a 65-miler last weekend and had no problems, nor have I during any of my regular rides.

I bought my first pair of bike shorts this year, two pairs actually.  I like them but don't consider them essential for riding.  If both shorts are in the laundry, I just wear regular running shorts.  No problem.
