Swim
Comments: I felt fairly comfortable, but did take in small amounts of water along the way. Water was a little choppy with a 2 foot shore break. All the men started as one wave, which made for a lot of traffic for the first hundre meters. I started at the north end of the pack, due to the current, and stayed in pretty clean water once past the first buoy. What would you do differently?: I've been working on my swim efficiency and am definitely seeing improvement as to how I feel when I leave the water. Time now to work on a better pull to get faster. Transition 1
Comments: Spent too much time getting sand off feet. What would you do differently?: HTFU and just go!! Bike
Comments: I started the ride easy for the first 2 miles to get my heart rate to settle down and then started picking it up. According to my Garmin, I averaged 22.83mph for the last 6.5 miles (really an improvement for me...thanks Trainer Road!) What would you do differently?: Keep integrating intervals into my bike training. Try to start stretching out my rides to get more distance. I need to get a good bike fit so that I can get more comfortable and efficient. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Calf started tightening up right out of T2 and I had to stop to stretch. I've deliberately kept my mileage down due to multiple knee surgeries, but since I have been cycling, my knees haven't bothered me at all. Now I'm just dealing with a spur on the back of my heel that can get pretty painful. What would you do differently?: Increase mileage and incorporate interval training into my limited running regimen. My long term goal is to do St. Anthony's next year with my wife. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: All in all, I felt pleased with the race, but feel I can better my run splits with more training. In my 40's, my 5K race pace was 6:40, and while I know that I'll ever see that again, I also know I can get to a faster pace with more training. More bricks will also help. Event comments: Great job by everyone involved...lots of volunteers and a very organized event. Also, a very nice venue. Will definitely do it again next year. Given the LLS connection, I was surprised to see that it was not a Team in Training event. Last updated: 2012-05-16 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4am, had some quick oats and out the door for the drive to Vero. Picked up race packet, got body marked and proceeded to set up transition. Walked through the bike and run entrance and exits to get familiar and then walked over to the beach.
Swim out to turn buoy and the swam north. It looked like a south current and I wanted to see if there was any drift.
