I am going to switch to shorter cranks with a compact for my specialized transition.  I have shimano 105  - 175 mm 53/39 on there now and was thinking for ease of swap to just go with 105 or ultegra in shorter crank with compact chainrings.  I can't find any great deals on these right now.  I have a line on a new Gossamer pro compact crankset with the bb, in the length I want . The price is definitely right.

This involves a bottom bracket change, and I have heard that the shimano cranksets tend to shift better, and that the bottom bracket and chainrings hold up longer.  I don't have bottom bracket tools so would have to take it the shop for the switch.  Before I do this, any opinons, thoughts or experience with the FSA vs. Shimano?

Thanks.

The BB tool is pretty cheap, and the swap is easy to do... And I believe it's the same tool for both the FSA and Shimano BB's. You could buy the tool with what the shop will charge to swap it out once.

I have FSA Gossamer's on several of my bikes, and have had no issues at all, either with shifting or longevity.

What tool(s) are required?  I have the same crankset and am also considering a switch.

I used an FSA Energy crank for several seasons, essentially, a hollow-core version of the Gossamer with what I believe are the same rings as the Gossamer Pro.  My experience was generally positive - shifting performance was very good, wear was minimal.  FSA BBs are not on par with the Shimano units, but it is my understanding that all of the aluminum FSA cranksets are compatible with Shimano BB (this was the combo that I used for two seasons).
