Short of leaving the Garmin out on my bike to put on after the swim, how can I do this? I just want to be pressing the usual buttons, not scrolling through menus and the like.

Anybody know the trick to make this work?

If you want your splits for a pool swim, I would recommend a cheap waterproof watch.  Then, just set your Garmin to Multisport mode and configure it for Bike-Transition-Run.  Turn it on before the race and leave it on your bike.  It'll be ready to go when you're out of the water.

I do this for almost all of my races.  Though, I don't care too much about checking my watch during the swim portion.

Plan B could be a variation of the old 'Ziploc bag under the swim cap' trick, but it could be a PITA.  Then you can just set the multisport mode to Other-Transition-Bike-Transition-Run.

Of course, you could always buy a 910xt...

Is it an indoor or outdoor pool?

If it is an indoor pool, it might not be worth it.  It will either spend the entire time looking for satellites or you will have to put it in Indoor mode, and then switch it to outdoor mode once on the bike.  This will cause data-loss during satellite recognition once on the bike.

If it is an outdoor pool, I would suggest putting it in your swimcap.  They are water resistant, however many users have complained about it stopping working if you push buttons or negatively affect the water seals while it is in the water.  It works in the water, however it is not awesome in the water.

It's an indoor pool. I should have made that clear. My concern is not about the waterproof-ness of it, it is about the satellite reception freezing it up and requiring input. I have no reservations about swimming with it on my wrist for 350 yards.
