Overall Rank = 71/532
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 7/60
Pre-race routine:

Overall data is Male only
Woke up at 5:15 and had a bowl of raisin bran with milk and coffee
BM and change into race gear
put bags in the car and headed out - realized we had forgotten our tire pump and so didn't leave until 6:10 - we arrived with a line of cars around 7:00 found a parking spot and
Event warmup:

Not much warm up this morning. We took some time to test running out of T1 and getting the bikes up the hill got back and I had 1/2 a PB and honey sandwich and sipped water with 1/2 of a power bar. We hit the PP and made our way to the meeting.
After the pre-race meeting at 8:15 we went back to the bikes and got into our Wet-suits then went to the beach and swam around a little.
Swim
  • 07m 13s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

The start was good - stayed in the front to the first buoy - got a little trapped between two other swimmers. Soon we were running into slow swimmers from previous waves and there was really no way to get into a rhythm - spent a lot of time with my head out of the water trying to figure out where I could find a lane.
What would you do differently?:

Not much - it was just too crowded.
Transition 1
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

I don't like standing on my wet suit so I use my hands - got caught on my timing chip but everything else went well.

Most of the transition time was getting to and from my spot.

Had a little trouble finding my cleats but got up to speed well
What would you do differently?:

Learn a flying mount
Bike
  • 36m 46s
  • 12.8 miles
  • 20.89 mile/hr
Comments:

Like the swim the course was crowded - felt like I was constantly passing people - unavoidable drafting at times as the course was full with people riding 3 to 5 wide.
Strategy of working the hills a little harder seemed to pay off as I was able to rest a little more on the downhills and do most of my passing going up - still passed a lot folks on the steep downhills
What would you do differently?:

Not sure - I want to keep building leg strength with this hill work. I would say that I need to focus on hill climbing technique but it was hard to focus on technique when you were constantly worried about people running into you.
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

biggest transition area I've ever used - lots of running the bike and a really steep astro-turf covered hill to negotiate.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure - I can see why you want to run without your bike shoes in the big races.
Run
  • 21m 44s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out feeling really good but mentally I just couldn't deal with all the people on the course - Constantly having to slow down and dodge back and forth. Coupled with the sun I mentally kind of checked out - I think part of it was that I was mentally tired from the bike ride and trying to stay out of collisions.
What would you do differently?:

Needed to get my head in the game.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked from the finish to a hill in the shade and stretched while I waited for Renee. After she finished we walked and stretched some more.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too many people on the course.

Event comments:

This is a good race for a new person - very welcoming of newbies. Unfortunately it is really too crowded they need to find some way to break up the waves differently if they are going to have this many people on this small of a course.
