Pre-race routine:

set up transition, ate a bonk breaker (no banana today!), went for 15 minute jog
Event warmup:

went for a 15 minute jog, stretched
  • 27m 4s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 48s / 100 meters

My swim was the most disappointing leg of this race. I tried to hang with the front pack, but I chose a poor starting location and just flailed around mainly. I have no other way to describe my swim except sloppy - I didn't ever get into a rhythm, I wasn't able to breathe bilaterally due to chop and disorientation, and I couldn't see a dang thing in front of me, as my goggles were scratched, the sun was blinding, and I just wasn't on my game. I also didn't remember how many straight buoys vs. turn buoys were out there, and the yellow ones were very hard to see. Got kicked a few times.
What would you do differently?:

new goggles, really study the swim course, definitely start diagonal and front instead of straight and in the middle of the bottleneck.
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, really.
  • 1h 03m 50s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.36 mile/hr

Had a great bike! Set a PR on the 40K distance, and had the fastest women's bike split by over 7 minutes. I had the 3rd fastest men and women combined. I felt I did a really good job pacing this one too - put in a hard, steady effort but backing off just enough off a sprint pace to not trash myself for the run. The course was mainly flat with a few minor rollers. Hardly any car traffic, although I did get stalled by a vehicle who got stuck behind two racers blocking the lane. Grrr. I also pinched my finger in the shifter and bled all over the right shift lever. Sticky mess. My new speedfill worked great - and I for once drank enough on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

nothing, really. Can't top a PR!
Transition 2
  • 00m 38s

Nice, fast T2.
What would you do differently?:

  • 46m 31s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 29s  min/mile

A PR for the 10K on a triathlon! I am pretty happy with my run, but still wonder if I could have held a faster pace than this. I came off the bike the third woman out there (well, I thought I was 2nd but one of the other women I didn't realize was a woman...sorry if that sounds mean, but it's hard to tell with hats and unitards and stuff), and tried to close in on the one who was about 400 yards ahead. I kept her pace for a while, though I wasn't able to catch her. Got passed by another woman in the last mile...she was FLYING so I let her go.

The mental aspect of the run is so difficult...I was running hard, I knew I had a decent pace going, but I still was conservative. How do you know when your body's just whining and when you really should ease up? I will continue to work on this as the season progresses.
What would you do differently?:

Trust myself to go a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

walked a lot, stretched the hips and quads

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing. perfect conditions

Event comments:

Kerr Lake is a great venue and has great volunteers. Love the flat, fast course. I just wonder why it doesn't draw more participants. It's well-run by a well-known company, so I don't think it's marketing. I was surprised to see less than 200 start the race.
