Pre-race routine:

Walked around and took in the environment. Got to the race pretty early, so I had lots of time to kill. Scoped out the different transition entries/exits.
Event warmup:

Jogged easy for a few minutes (maybe a 1/2 mile), then did some active stretches. As the transition area was closing up, I got in the water for a warm-up swim. Swam easy maybe 400 yds.
Swim

  • 586 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Generally, a good swim. I could have gone a bit faster, but am still pleased with the swim. I tried to draft a bit, but didn't get close enough to get in the slipstream (it just felt rude to creep up on someone's feet). After the second bouy, I went a bit wide and had to correct my course some.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace some more after the second bouy.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

I seemed to really struggle with my socks (as always). I need to work on going sockless so I can have a much quicker T1.
Bike
  • 48m 37s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.28 mile/hr
Comments:

While I could definitely work on improving my hill climbing ability, overall it was a pretty good ride. I hit some good speeds on the downhills and flats, and stayed in the drops for a good bit of the ride. Everything was going well for most of the ride, and then, . . . FLAT! I flatted out with about a 1/2 mile to go. Now, this was just about the best place to have this happen, as it didn't ruin my race. I coasted on the flat until there was a turn, then I hopped off and jogged the bike in for about the last 1/4 mile.
What would you do differently?:

Improve hill climbing; not get a flat.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

I usually have pretty fast T2s, and this was pretty good. I was a bit frantic because of the flat, but still had a good transition.
Run
  • 27m 16s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

Okay, I admit that I hadn't practiced a single brick run this year, so I wasn't expecting to come out of T2 that easy. While it didn't feel bad, I had a particularly slow first mile. The second and third miles were better, but I still feel like I could have gone faster. Need to work on speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around; took in some nutrition (MuscleMilk), drank water, and stretched.

Nice job!  Too bad about the flat, but as you said it was probably just about the best place to have it happen.  I was one behind you in the AG.
