Swim
Comments: This was a mass start with maybe 110 participants, through a narrow opening/beach. I started to the right and kept right, keeping the bouys and the pack to my left. I swam at an easy, what I thought was maybe a 1:40-1:45 pace. No problems at all. I was stunned to hear "9:30" as I left the water. I may have added 20-30 yards by keeping clear of the pack, but in my opinion this course was significantly longer than 440 yards. Not that it matters, we all raced the same course, but it wounds my pride to see a 2 min+ pace on my log. Actually, I can't swim that slow and stay afloat, so I know I was faster than that. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I thought I had a decent race. Transition 1
Comments: There were no timing chips or official transition area markings, all times are from my watch. This time includes the run to the transition area and out to the road. What would you do differently?: Move quicker. Bike
Comments: I need to be mentally tougher. I caught myself holding back to save something for the run, when my pre-race plan was to go all out since I was going to limp through the run anyway. What would you do differently?: Ride skinnier. I am getting pretty good on the bike and blow by a lot of people on the flats, but I still struggle to haul my 249 pound behind uphill. Transition 2
Comments: I strolled through T2. My legs were shot and I took my time to recover. Run
Comments: The course started uphill and the best I could manage was a walk for most of the first mile. As it leveled off I picked up speed and developed a sort of hop-drag technique to get the injured left leg into the race. What would you do differently?: Hopefully, with softball season over (my big mistake), I can start to heal and get ready for my late season races. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Ongoing injuries and excess weight. Event comments: This was the inaugural running of this race and it lacked some of the bells and whistles the more established races have. It was a nice race, but I think it will be a better race next year. Thanks to the BT tattoos, we again met some fellow BTer's. It was nice to meet all of you. Abear2 was wearing her tattoo and a lady passed me on the run and warned me that my "better half" was not far behind (and gaining I figured, at the pace I was going), which motivatd me to keep pushing. :) Congratulations to Abear2 for second place in her AG!
