Total Time = 2h 18m 6s
Overall Rank = 141/190
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 5/6
Pre-race routine:

Hydrate the day before, Ensure Plus before bed and first thing a.m. More EFS and a gel 30 min before swim.
Event warmup:

Very apprehensive about swim, decided to take a quick dip to get ready. Twenty feet in felt like dropping out of the race, but swam out to the first bouy and back and felt better about making the distance.
Swim
  • 24m 26s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

Goal was to keep my face in the water the whole time, no side/back stroking. Ran out until deep enough to swim, following right behind main pack. Good job drafting off them for the first 150 or so until some guy kept swimming up my back. Had to veer inside to get away and lost the draft. About 400m I got a groove and HR lowered, pretty straight on the way out, seemed to drift a little on the way in back. Overall, achieved the goal of swimming the whole thing, unlike Kemah. Started running out when hands hit the sand.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have pushed it harder but goal was to swim the whole thing, had some left at the end.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Happy to see bikes still on the rack when I got there.
What would you do differently?:

No problems, just move quicker.
Bike
  • 57m 28s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 19.46 mile/hr
Comments:

Passed by 2 AG'ers on the ride, back and forth with one but he eventually dropped me
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on hills, seem to crawl up when everybody else flies by (incl. RCP).
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Run
  • 52m 31s
  • 4.97 miles
  • 10m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Walked at first half mile for inhaler, then walked each water station. Took cold water for head and body, as well as drink. Heat really caught up by 2/3 of the way in, got passed by AG but couldn't stay with him.
What would you do differently?:

Need to run the whole course. Aid station was an excuse to walk, HTFU. Last in AG on run, and in training I know I can do better than 10:00/mile, even from a brick.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, more bike and run training. Feeling better about swim now than after Kemah, so that work has paid off.

Event comments:

Walked my way out of a podium spot, only needed to pick up 3 minutes and definitely spent more than that walking.
