Subject: Oly 8 days before a 70.3?
Question: I'm considering doing an Oly 8 days before my HIM. My plan calls for an hour swim, an hour ride and a 30 minute run as a brick that day.The Oly will take me about 40 minute swim, 1:15 bike, and hour run so pretty close except for the run. The only OWS I get to do us during races so the extra OWS swim would be nice.Thoughts?

Yes, but ONLY IF you can use it as a training day.

If you race it hard you may not recover in time for your HIM.

Has your training been complete, consistent and solid for the HIM thus far? How good are you at holding yourself back? Is the Oly a pretty flat course, not too technical?

If it were me, and it were a pretty low-risk course, I would do it, but take it very, very easy. If you're not good at this, you might be kissing your HIM execution goodbye.

15-minute warmup for the swim, then take it realllly easy to 45 min during the race ...

1:15 bike is pretty fast for an Oly ... again, I'd take it really easy maybe to 1:30 ...

Easy easy 30-min run, walk the rest. Like, as a cooldown.

Just a thought.

Thanks! Training has been solid and the course is flat and fast (Maybe too fast). I'm typically not good at holding back, but I've also not entered a race with using it as a training session. I think if I plan to DNF and just run the sprint course, I should be able to do it.

if the HIM is your "A" race why pay money to race an OLY at less than 100% and possible hurt ur effort at the HIM distance?

if the oly is your "A" race then go all out.

I never really understood "racing" a tri at 85% effort. then again im really cheap

best of luck!

If you're no good at holding back what makes you think you'll be good a purposely DNF'ing?? I couldn't pay for a race and then just DNF...Heck, I don't think I could race for free and then just DNF. (Especially with only a 5k left to go.) +1 on running the sprint course and then just walking/jogging the rest of the way if you're concerned...You're gonna want a cool down anyways. Might as well do it on the course instead of off of it.

If you already paid the race fees, I would use it as a training day.

We were in a situation last year were the weekend before a HIM we had to compete in the regional champs to be able to qualify for the national champs. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

Most of us had a chat among our fellow age-groupers before the race and decided that we will all go hard on the swim and bike, but we will go easy on the run. Our times were on average 10 min slower than normal but the next week we were all nice and fresh for the HIM.

TL/DR

You can go hard on the swim and bike, take it easy on the run

x2 on this, if your bike fitness is on track.

On the easy run, have FUN, be encouraging! Use your energy you've got from holding back to support your fellow triathletes.

I voted no....I bet your plan doesn't call for doing them as a brick/all right in a row.
