Overall Rank = 13/65
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/6
Pre-race routine:

Didn't plan on doing this one, but I got the good news the night before that the morning freed up. Since this was the first race I ever did, thought it would be nice to compare times.
Event warmup:

Jogged a mile+ out the trail by the park
Swim
  • 12m 26s
  • 586 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a rough time on this swim. its a very shallow start so I tried to jump in early like the real swimmers to not tire out my legs too much. Faceplanted and ended up with my goggles filled with sand and water. Swam out about 10 yds blind and stood to clear things up. There was a lot of contact and I wished I had wore my wetsuit. Some of the contact was a little crazy and someone was pushing my rear end down (legs along with it). Someone took an elbow from me pretty hard. I hope no real damage. Not sure how it happened but I felt the hard contac with my elbow on someone's skin, not neoprene. Things cleared up a lot after the first buoy, but overall I had a pretty crappy swim.
What would you do differently?:

Go back to wearing my wetsuit when I'm not biking to the race. Its very discouraging that I had the same (or worse) time as last year, when I've done so much more swimming
Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

No wetsuit so could have been a little quicker
Bike
  • 55m 25s
  • 18 miles
  • 19.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I really like this bike course. The hill at the start is a bear and so are some of the rollers, but its a nice mix out there. Starting so back in the pack from the swim, I passed a lot of people in the first 5 miles, then a few here or there. I managed to go hard without letting up too much given my bike fitness. My speed went from 16 mph last year to 19.5 and no one passed, so pretty happy
What would you do differently?:

Keep on trucking. And bring more water. I only had my 20oz aerobottle and I could have used a little more on this one.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Run
  • 26m 1s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was rough, but no one passed me and I passed a few. Took about 1:00/mile off of last year. Woot Woot!
What would you do differently?:

Go a little fast. Not much, just a little. This one hurt.
Post race
Warm down:

Hurried home to take the baby off of E's hands so she could take the bigguns to a party. In retrospect, I wish I had been able to stick around and pick up a little age group hardware :-) Oh well, I don't want to make it any move of a big deal that I'm racing so many Sundays.

Event comments:

Great race, with a nice long bike for a sprint. I knew I would PR since I was brand new last time, but am thrilled with taking 20 min off. Hope to keep dropping time, but the increments will be getting smaller from here I guess.

Great job -  swim sounds like it was brutal.  20 min. off is not something to scoff at - awesome!
