Sunny
Total Time = 1h 08m 50s
Overall Rank = 53/248
Age Group = Master Clydes
Age Group Rank = 2/14
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 - otameal for breakfast and packed up for the 35 minute drive. Had trouble with the Aero wheel on the back of the car - caused the bike to flair out - just slowed down and made there by 5:35. Got my credentials marked up and headed to transition. The woman next to me was super nervous - more later
Event warmup:

Ran about .7 of a mile on the gimpy ankle - the one I twisted hard 10 days ago -the ankle was ok not great and the run was going to hurt. Swam about 250 in the pool - pool was warm. I drank some water, eat some gels and got into my music.
Swim
  • 05m 33s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lasy in front was super nervous, telling I could pass her several times. Kind of threw me off my game. Swam hard, caught her at the 175 and passed her but it was not easy
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I dropped 10 seconds from last year and was first in my age group. I did flip turns on the first three odd walls and push turns under the lanes. Missed the the flip turns the last two odd walls
Transition 1
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Took a full 1:08 off last year in T1; very good time for me
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 34m 22s
  • 12.7 miles
  • 22.17 mile/hr
Comments:

My HR was in the 150s after the T1 and the swim - and it stayed there. I brought it down for a mile but decided to just push it. The lack of water was a concern and an issue.

Dropped 2:52 from last year. Great ride
What would you do differently?:

Ties my aero bottle down;
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Same time as last year - took a big gulp of water due to losing my water bottle on the run
Run
  • 26m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

The ankle hurt - I was thirsty and well it was great - I hoped for mid 26 or lower but could not get moving - mile 2 was not good
What would you do differently?:

I think the hydration on the bike was the issue - and my ankle
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a ton of fluids - basically did one hour at 88% of my HR and no water - needed to hydrate

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ankle

Event comments:

Great race - big but well supported - I did it last year and came back this year. As it was one two races from last year (my first in the sport) that I was doing again, it was an A race. I had a goal time of 1:11 with a stretch of 1:09 - I made my stretch goal and felt simply great. Lots of hard work, a good plan of rest for the last week and some mental toughness to deal with injury all paid off. I finished second and was it was I expected. The guy who beat me was .07 faster than last year - I beat him at longer swim and bikes - he is a faster runner. Very pleased
