I am signed up for the Mini Distance.  This will be my second triathlon.  I did the Hueston Woods oly last year.

Hearing about chip seal roads has made me nervous a little bit.  I have ridden on fairly freshly chip sealed roads before and it's not exactly fun.  However I have just decided that I'll just make the best of it.  Also the a high of 90 doesn't sound terribly great either.

I do have a question.  So on the HFP site for the Mini it shows as a 10k run at the top.  Then down lower it says 6.55 Miles for the mini.  On the course map it shows a 10k turn around before the 13.1mi turn around.  So for the mini is it a 10k run (6.21 mi) or 6.55mi, which would be half of 13.1?  It's kind of confusing.

Secondly it seems like HFP doesn't typically use number bibs?  I purchased a fuel belt / number belt last year for my triathlon and then didn't even need it.  It's not all that bad as I have used it for all of my running races and it's nice to not have to pin into my nice running shirts.  Just funny that HFP doesn't seem to use them for their events.

Good luck to everyone on Sunday.

I was able to run the course this past Sunday, and there are definitely 2 different turnarounds for the 10k and the 13.1 course. The markings I found where probably from last year but still well marked, and unfortunately for me I had to go further to find my turnaround !

I would say the course map is correct, other than that it does not show exact details. There is a right turn at the end of the course that the map does not show. This kind of threw me off as I was exploring the course.

bswcpa - 2012-08-22 7:28 AMLike David, I also notified HFP and I got this response this morning:"Thanks for the heads up! We are aware and working to change our course. However, we will let you know if anything changes.Sincerely,Customer Service Team HFP RacingPO Box 251Alexandria, Ohio 43001www.hfpracing.com

I've only raced an HFP event once, at Maumee Bay in June, but I was impressed with the level of professionalism and care so I'm sure they'll do right by us athletes in this race.

I like their signature line of the e-mail. It's nice to see that a company is not afraid to show their beliefs!

There is some shade, but I think the majority of the course is out in the sun.  With the weather man calling for 90 and muggy it should make for an enjoyable run.  To help understand the course, I have attached my google earth file from last weeks run.  The area's highlighted in yellow are the spots that are going to be the toughest for the sun.  Especially going out to the turnaround, this area is completely sunny and just seemed to be a tad bit warmer.  Area marked start is where transition is located and the arrow shows direction going out..  The line marked in yellow is the sunny spots I was referring to.  (this is the 13.1 course)

Mambos,

Thank you...and nicely done.  Yes, the weather forecast should make for a very enjoyable run  I hate the heat, but what can we do?

Does anyone have directions on how to get to the beach? Looks like I would take 70 to rte to N. Bird Rd. I thought HFP usually sent an email with these details, but I haven't gotten one.

fitnesskelly - That's the directions I got from Mapquest. I70 to Bird. I didn't get an email from HFP either.

MATT - Thanks SO much for taking the time to show the run map. Great info. I WILL see you there this time. I'm not going to miss you like I did at Maumee Bay.

I'll be camping at site #13 Saturday and racing in yellow and black FCA Endurance gear. Feel free to say "hi" if you see me and introduce yourself. Good luck to everyone racing! Looks like we'll be having a hot sufferfest together.

The directions I used to visit the park last weekend...direct from the park site were perfect:  http://www.buckcreekstatepark.org/directions.html

For anyone traveling from the Cinci/Dayton area and going to take St Rt 68 through Yellow Springs...Don't do it!  They have their Jazz Festival this weekend and it will be packed.  Perhaps this is more important for the trip home than early in the morn.  I am staying clear of it.

Please say hello if you recognize me!  I'll be in black bottoms, white/black top, and going to give my Desoto Cool Wings a try.   I'm in the 45-49 AG'ers so part of the old (not oldest) farts.

David

Those Desoto cool wings sure look neat, David. Hope they work for you. I'm hoping they have ice at the run aid stations to help cool the rest of us off that didn't think to get arm coolers.

HFP just posted on their Facebook page that the bike course has indeed been changed.

It looks like there are new bike courses up on the HFP website to avoid the chip sealed roads:

Looks like they just updated the course map.

for the half -

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/128432593/

Probably a steeper downhill than Neer-Mahar on the Pleasant/vernon-catawba section.

Might actually be a better course, as the section that was chip-sealed wasn't very good before the chip seal.  I'm a little concerned about boat traffic (cars towing boats that is) and gravel near clark lake.

This is fantastic! I was worried about the loose gravel. The section that has been eliminated had a decent hill on it, does this change eliminate a hill or is there something on th enew path that will replace it? I will need to drive the course to keep my bearings, and I hope on race day I don't go by habit and make the turn anyway.

I am also camping, and Brenda it appears you are almost right across from me, I am in spot 63! Just listen for the noisy kids and that's my spot . I will be wearing a blue/grey 2XU one piece during the race, hope to see everyone there.

After passing Neer Rd on Vernon-Asbury, there are some rolling hills, but I'm sure it's an even trade off since we won't be doing the original out and back. The course is super fast after the rolling section I just mentioned. I'm very pleased with the change.I will be just a few sites down from you guys. I'm on site 18. I will be arriving sometime this evening. Stop by and say hi. It still hast kicked in that I'm racing Sunday...... David Hohl will be supplying free beer for everyone tonight at site 19

Last time we camped by the Hohls, David was drinking red wine - in a big wine glass too! I see he's changed his beverage of choice.

Glad you like the bike course change, Dan, since you're familiar with the area.

Darn I missed the FREE Beer!!  I stopped by to swim this afternoon - the water to me seemed chilly, maybe because it was 90 degrees out!!!

I'm ready to race, I have to get my bike cleaned tomorrow then I will FEEL super fast!

My wife heard that he survived....and we do believe it was a heart attack. Horrible...and I hope for a good outcome. Well, that race kicked my butt yesterday. I had good swim but only got a couple of miles out on the bike and had a flat. The tube blew so abruptly that it shattered my wheel over. I luckily got a ride back to transition....where after a great deal of time a man from out-of-nowhere grabbed my wheel and fixed it! I hitched a ride back to my bike and got back on course. I had to tear off my wheel over the best I could. The worst part was that I had used some anti-fog in my goggles and did not get it all cleaned out. This crippled me the entire race with many times on the bike and run I could not see. The pain was so bad in my right eye it would make my left eye water up. The bike portion was dangerous but I finished it. The run I did almost entirely blind by listening for footsteps of other runners. Finished it also! Went to the hospital last night and the doc said I have a chemical burn on the cornea covering 80%. Have to see a specialist this morn. So my first HIM was not what I envisioned but I finished it. I hope I was not in anyone's way.

Brenda - I am sorry I did not get a chance to really say "hi" yesterday. You looked strong, from what I could see, and cruising through the run. Next time. David

Don't really know what to say...kind of lost interest in doing a race report, after reading about this.

Well that strikes me very sadly that this person did not make it.  My wife heard numerous people say it was a "near" fatality.  I'll add them to my prayers this week.

I heard before I left yesterday that the gentleman did not make it, I didn't realize he was 69 until I read the information from the Springfield paper today.

My prayers go out to his family, who was also in attendence at the race.

OMG! I didn't know this happened? Does anyone know what race he was in? I did the mini and don't recall seeing anyone pulled out before they sent us in the water...but there was such a crowd. Poor guy...I feel so sorry for his family, as well as the whole tri community. Hate to hear something like this happened.

I don't know which race he was doing but I was in the last wave of the Half and was on my second lap when I had to stop to let them take him to shore. It was heart-wrenching as the lifeguards were yelling for 911 and asking us swimmers to go around. If he was in any race besides the Half, he'd been in the water a long time.

Besides praying for the families, I've added HFP to my prayers and the lifeguards (most looked to be younger women). I'm sure they're struggling to come to terms with witnessing the loss of life.
