Pre-race routine:

We were at the site around 5:45AM. Got set up in transition, walked a bit, stretched a bit. The nervous energy was really flowing. We were early, but with almost 1200 competitors, I wanted to be early since this was my first and I did not know what to expect. In the future, I will be 15-30 minutes later.
Event warmup:

Not much, ran a little bit, but mostly spent time stretching properly.
Swim
  • 12m 57s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really happy with my time, given that 100 yards in I had to resort to breast stroke. The nervous energy got to me by this point. I had trouble with my breathing and never found a rythym in the swim. Bumped into a few people, had an ankle grabbed, but nothing special. All in all, I was satisfied with the swim.
What would you do differently?:

I need to spend more time in the pool working on my stroke, but I will be better prepared for the swim. The unknown was the biggest factor.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

No problems here. Quick towel off of my feet, geared up and out. It was a bit of a run from the end of the water to the transition area. Felt my time was good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 36m 24s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 18.96 mile/hr
Comments:

Very happy with my bike time. Few people passed me. The only people who did were serious riders on tri bikes and aero helmets. Felt really strong in this portion and very focused. Avg pace for me was excellent.
What would you do differently?:

I need to spend more time in the bike and get up to a 20MPH pace, but very happy with my performance here.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Nothing much here. Bike dismount area came up all of a sudden. If it wasnt for a woman telling us to slow down, I may have blown through it! Anyway, it was about a 150 yard run from dismount area to transition area, so that was a surprise, but all in all, not bad.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 28m 23s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

About a 10 days before the race, I developed runners knee that affected me after 2.5 miles. Knowing this, I held back a bit in the run trying not to aggrevate it. I easily could have done 8:30-45 minute miles, but it is what it is. As it was, the last .25 miles were pretty painful. It acts up on downhill runs, and as luck would have it, there was a nice downhill that propelled you to a flat finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not get runners knee 10 days prior to the race.

Runners Knee

Event comments:

The race organzier, CGI Racing, put on an excellent event. This is my first Tri, but I have run in many 5k-10k races. Highly organized, well thought out, with plenty of volunteers. Well done on their part.
