Im training for my 1st Ironman, so take my advice with a grain of salt.  I too am doing a 30 week training plan. (Fink's Competitive Plan).  The one thing I did, which I am glad I did it, was to start my 30 week training plan about 35 weeks out from my race.  This allowed me some "flex weeks".  So when life and work got too hectic, I am able to kind of spread out 1 weeks training over a couple of weeks if need be.  I wouldnt necessarily take more days off, but maybe I would only get the one work out that day, rather than the two that was scheduled.  It has worked great for me.  Good luck

I'm doing my first IM in Melbourne which is 35weeks away.  I'm tentatively doing Fink's Intermediate but at the moment am training for Shepparton Half IM in November so I've worked back from where Fink puts in a HIM.  My base is fine as I did Cairns HIM in June.  I have a coach and he's happy with my plan at the moment.  As soon as Shep is out of the way I will be ramping up to Fink's plan proper - gives me about 18weeks to IM.  Wow, that sounds close!!!!

Normally, for me, prior to starting a specific IM programme I focus on Generic strength and fitness, normally with a wider variety of types of training involved.

After all there's plenty of time to get board with just SBR training during the actual programme

Swim, bike and run.  Triathlon is ALL about endurance.  This does not mean no intensity.

Not knowing exactly where you are strting from, gebnerally, my advice would be to start building running frequency.  Keep those easy.  Start riding a couple times a week for about an hour or so where you ride hard--at/near or above threshold level work.  Have one longer ride, if possible, but don't 'lollygag' on it.  Push the pace.

Do whatever, but i would make sure u are running. Picking up the bike and swim is pretty easy (IMO) if u have a good cardio base (which running will provide). I would not go into an ironman plan on little cardio base or you will be playing catchup for 30 weeks.

Yep, what he said.

S/B/R lots. Keep it consistent.

Build strength:
In the weight room.

Using big gears on the bike.

Running hills on the run.

If your shoulders are agreeable, then use paddles on the swim.

Strength = speed.

When you are tired at mile 18 of the IM Marathon run, you aren't going to wish you were faster, but you will wish you were stronger.

This is awesome advice.
