Pre-race routine:

This was my first OLY distance event. I'm very happy with my race. I hit my target splits, swim :30, Bike 1:30, Run 1:10. Within 1 minute on each on a more difficult course than my normal training routes.

Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 31m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Focused on easy stroke for first half. I felt good so picked it up a bit from 800m to 1300m. Last 200m I kind of fell apart, just wanted to get the swim over with. Over all I am happy with the swim. Note: water temp was announced as 86F, a bit warm.
What would you do differently?:

Relax the last 200m
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Bike
  • 1h 28m 38s
  • 27 miles
  • 18.28 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty happy with the ride. I was trying to hold back a bit for the first half, not always successful. Rolling course with some steeper sections than my normal training rides. Took in 3 gu packs at :15, :45, and 1:15 as my only nutrition for the day.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Run
  • 1h 11m 35s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

First 2 miles went well with the exception of a feeling of too much water in the stomach. I didn't feel too bad coming off the bike. Worked on staying cool with dumping water over the head and using cold towels. Had to walk the long hill at miles 2 and 5. Tried to kick at the end, but just didn't have it. Legs were shaking after crossing the finish.

Great job Steve! Congrats on getting your first OLY under your belt.  Sounds like you managed your race really well!  It is kind of a cool distance and nice that the swim is a more significant part of the race.
