Pre-race routine:

Hydrate, eat. Had to bike 6.5miles to swim start with tri-pack on my back. Wasn't too excited about it. Otherwise just chilled out. Suntan lotioned up. Swam for 5 minutes.
Event warmup:

1.2 mile swim.
Swim
  • 40m 19s
  • 2351 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

1000 people hitting the water at once was interesting. Don't practice that much. Me and about 500 other people overshot buoy 2 by about 100 yards! Oh well. Was very comfortable the whole way. Felt my best during the last 1/3rd. Passing was virtually impossible. Too many bodies around.
What would you do differently?:

learn to swim faster.
Transition 1
  • 04m 47s
Comments:

no problems here. Had a chance to see Deb and give her a quick kiss.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 8s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Beutiful scenery. Tough ride with all the hills. Hit 48mph at one point! Miles 28-35 were FAST downhill and downwind. Avged around 30mph during this stretch with light pedaling. Going back up the descent I hit 48mph on was not fun. Slightly slower going back up. Around mile 48.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Had a good bike race. Averaged 18.9mph. 1.7mph faster than my half in March and on a tougher course.
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Easy. Race volunteers took bike as soon as we dismounted.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 03m 19s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Need to work on my run. Have to log more miles. Legs were okay this time. The heat was getting to me here. Walked through every aid station to cool down.
What would you do differently?:

Train more run focused.
Post race
Warm down:

Fall down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

9 months into training. Not enough time yet. Need more swim and run volume. Working on it.

Event comments:

Spectacular venue. Racing in Kona baby! It's hard racing in this division. These guys are good! Give me a few years and I'll get into the upper 1/3rd.
