Pre-race routine:

Got into town late Friday night so we were up at 4-something to get to packet pick up by 5:00 am. Racked the bikes, set up the TA and chilled in the car until it got a little later. Met up with Karen around 6-something who rode her bike over.
Event warmup:

No real warm up. Swam out to the swim start and treaded water.
Swim
  • 08m 51s
  • 587 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Similar to Philly, made a focused effort to push the swim. Was able to draft a little in the beginning, but then was passing people from the wave in front of me (3 min earlier). Sighting was good and swam into shore as far as I could before standing up. Long run up the soft sand, across the boardwalk and into transition (included in swim time).
What would you do differently?:

Maybe run harder up the sand to the TA.
Transition 1
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Efficient transition and the fastest in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Good transition.
Bike
  • 36m 7s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.94 mile/hr
Comments:

WOO HOO! Fastest bike split in my AG! Made it a focus to ride hard. It was flat and fast and I kept trying to pick people off. Actually raced this versus just riding. Got passed by a chick in my AG as I was finishing my first lap of the bike. I passed her back and she re-passed me. I couldn't go with her so let her go and tried to keep her in sight. Finished with a tailwind coming from Deal.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Fastest T2.
Almost ran by my rack...off with the bike stuff and slid my running shoes on. Grabbed the rest and put on my visor, race belt and water bottle as I ran.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Well executed.
Run
  • 23m 25s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was tough. I was ready to be done and it took some mental effort to keep pushing. I tried to pick as many off as I could and managed to not get passed by anyone in my AG. I saw the chick that passed me on the bike while on the OAB and knew I couldn't catch her (she ended up placing overall). Brad yelled I was in the top 10 female OA and I kept trying to maintain a solid pace. On the final stretch, I looked over my shoulder as I knew (from the OAB) a chick was making up ground on me. I turned it on with the finish line in sight and heard Brad yell to drop the hammer as she was right there. Ended up out sprinting her in the chute to beat her by 3 seconds. Having been passed in the chute at Bumpass, I wasn't gonna let it happen again. Turned out she was 19, but still glad to secure the 9th OA female.
What would you do differently?:

More brick workouts maybe?
Post race
Warm down:

Took a while to stop sweating. Grabbed our stuff out of the TA and some food as we waited for awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. Good race for me. Improved in every discipline from last year and shaved a few minutes off of last year's race.

Event comments:

This is a fun race that's really close to Karen and Mike. It's pretty inexpensive and a fun, fast course. It's annoying that year after year, the run course isn't a full 5k when they have two out and backs. I am also worried when they have zippy security checking bikes leaving the transition area after the race. That being said, I'm sure we will be back.
