Age Group Rank = 13/19
Pre-race routine:

awoke at 4:35. car already packed. made oatmeal and toast and coffee. on the road by 5:02 and ate oatmeal, half a slice of toast w/ peanut butter and a bannana. checked in by 6:40, and racked bike and hit the bathroom. had a cliff gel about 15 minutes prior to race. race was late to start.
Event warmup:

wetsuit optional, I wore mine. water was 78 degrees. went for a short swim to get wet and used to the water. water was very dirty.

Swim
  • 28m 9s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

first 1500m swim in race. went well. went out easy and just tried to swim within myself. felt great the entire swim. a little sunglare on second lap, tried to sight off of swimmers in front of me, bouys not too large, hard to see sometimes. but overall went good. After looking at results I can not believe I was 3rd in my age group out of the water. I knew I was passing some people but didn't know how I was doing. Very happy with results, but still could of pushed the pace a little especially in the second lap.
What would you do differently?:

try to swim a little harder the second half of the swim. maybe start a little more to the front of the pack as well.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

took my time. a lot of sand on my feet. almost forgot my glasses.
Bike
  • 1h 24m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.75 mile/hr
Comments:

averaged about 18=mph which my current ability is a good average. got passed by a lot of riders, but felt pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

have to train on my bike more. probably could have pushed my pace a little more. but didn't want to blow up my legs for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

running shoes pre tide.
Run
  • 57m 58s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

first ever 10k run within a race. tried to keep a steady easy pace. ran entire way until about the last mile. took 2-3 walks about 15-20 yrds each in the last mile or so. did experience pain on both heals at about 1/2 point. had blisters on both feet.
What would you do differently?:

figure a way not to get blisters.
Post race
Warm down:

had two half subs and water provided by race, sat on bench for 20+or- min.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bike. need to work hard on training on bike. came out 36 in the water and was 120th on bike.

Event comments:

nice t-shirt, no finisher metal provided (I don't need another one).
First Olympic Tri, and was happy to finish under 3hrs at 2:55. swim went well, bike for my current ability was good, but needs work to keep up with the average racer, and run was average as well.
