So I got thinking about it out on my run today.  We will see if this is any more interesting than my bicycle thread yesterday...

I have run a number of races in the last year or so and found it interesting what percentage I placed in in the different events.

Warrior dash - top 5%

Local 5k - top 15%

HIM - top 60%

Xterra - Top 85%

Those are just some examples I could think of off the top of my head.  Now I'm pretty sure I am not getting that much worse.  I have noticed that the races I do the worst in seem to attract a MUCH more serious clientele.  Just find it interesting is all.

What has your experience been with how competitive you are in different sorts of races?

It's been my experience that the longer the race, the more competitive it is.

Yea I thought that too, but the Xterra was much more competitive than the HIM I did and it was only a 1k/20k/10k.  I guess not many "Just for the fun of it" people enter those?

Yeah, that doesn't suprise me.  Warrior dash would bring out the widest range of athletic ability, I haven't done an Xterra, but I imagine it would have the most competitive field out of those you listed.

I think some of it depends on the actual event as well as the distance. A Komen race for the cure is going to attract a lot more casual runners than a smaller 5K put on by a local running group.

Local 5ks = 93%

Road Tris = 93%

Xterras = 90%

One of my 5ks was a larger event that brings out walkers and such.  There I was 96%, so it really does depend on the race characteristics.

Xterras have their recreational participants too, but far, far fewer.  Not only is there the open water swim to contend with (but of course most tris have that), but the mtn biking isn't very friendly to noobs.  But I DO find that the people at the Xterra races are more laid back and approachable.  In that respect it's a better environment for the less-than-hard-core athletes.
