So I went and 29er'd myself. Got a Kona Explosif steel hardtail on the way, along with some Magura Louise BAT Carbon brakes. XTR/XT drivetrain left over from selling my last frame. Just gotta get a fork and rims (also some XTR hub leftovers) and I'll be in bidness. Oh, tires too. Any recommendations?

Brakes arrived a little while ago. Both front & rear unused, and I paid less for both than one would cost retail. Victory!

Went down to the LBS today... They have a Trance X 29er 1 on order. When it comes it they're going to build it up and give me a ring. :D

Sold the Salsa frame earlier this year. Picked up a pair of new Stans Arch rims for a steal. I'll just have to figure out the tires thing. I prefer grip over speed most of the time.

Grip; winner is WTB. Speed; Panaracer. To avoid: Maxxis, Kenda (too firm and not resilient)

If I find some Hutchinson Spiders, it'll be Game Over. Running those on my 26er, love 'em.

I am old school and still riding a 26 inch set of wheels. I will probably spring for a 29er for my next bike, but wanted to get another couple seasons on 26s so that I can work on my line-choosing and handling skills without the benefit of bigger wheels.

2011 Yeti 575. The best bike for what I love to ride- big drops and technical rock gardens. It's also great for climbing and does well on all-day rides around here in CO, which in 30 miles can throw absolutely every type of riding at you.

My advice is do your research, but then go demo the bikes you're considering. A bike can sound great and look like a dream on paper, but you've got to ride it to know if it's right for you. If you're making such a big investment, spend the extra money and time to ride the bikes you're considering. It can be incredibly illuminating to ride different bikes and see how you feel on them. Sometimes the newest, shiniest technology will not feel as good to you as something else.

When looking to get a bike at the beginning of this year, I demoed a Santa Cruz LTC that was worth about 6.5 grand all built up. I didn't like it as much as the Yeti 575 I ended up buying, for less than half the price. Sometimes the price and components don't ensure that undefinable great "feel" of a bike.

Thanks Pitt. Its a 2007 but its new to me as of 2 months ago. It is my first full suspension bike and after 39 years of hardtails, I'll never go back.

So... I spoke with the LBS yesterday and it looks like the Giant 29ers are on back order until some time in Nov. Can't wait that long for a new ride. So... I'm thinking I'm going to bite the bullet and get an Ibis Mojo SL (SLX build). I know it's SLX, but it's probably better than the 20yr old XTR I have on my DEAN. In any event, I'm prob going to take a ride over to RI on Mon and check out the Ibis.

That is a bad azz bike. I love the way they look, what a frame design. I think the new SLX would be a step up from XTR from the 90s. Defenitely more reliable and thats what its about when your out on the trails.

Slight setback in my 29er quest...

Frame arrived, but the seller packed it very poorly, and the head tube was damaged in shipment, can't mount a headset in its current state.

Good news is that the seller refunded my money, bad news is I still don't have a workable frame. I *should* be able to get it to a working state, but it'll never be perfect...

I ride a Mojo and am super happy with it. Just sent my shocks to Push industries to have them rebuilt and customized to my weight/riding style.

You won't regret it. Although that first scratch on the frame hurt, now there are so many you don't notice.

I just got a 2003-ish specialized Enduro, full suspension 26". It was pretty reasonably priced on Craigslist ($450) and it fit (I'm 5'2), so I bought that. I'm having a blast. In the last week I've went mountain biking 5 times and 3 of those times were for more than 4 hours!

I agree. Its a VERY nice break from the road bike. I actually have alot more fun on my mountain bike than I ever have riding the roads.

It's also kind of a nice change because it's getting darker earlier and I don't mind riding on trails in the dark at all. I have some pretty good lights and go with a group of people. Riding on the road in the dark is not quite as nice, though I did enjoy some 10pm rides home on the road last year. The roads were so quiet.
