Subject: My puppy is crazy

Our 4 month old puppy has recently developed the habit of getting rather upset when she sees another dog. But not just any other dog. This is saved for the dog that looks exactly like her and lives in our fireplace doors  and our sliding glass doors. Between bouts of laughing heartily watching her, we wonder how long it will be before she realizes this is just her reflection in the glass? Our 9 year old daughter has even named the 'other dog' "Remmus" which is our dog's name (Summer) backwards. Typical puppy brain, I suspect. She usually follows this up with a good chasing her own tail until she falls over dizzy session. Entertaining, for sure!

My dog is 10 years old and still does that....minus the dizzy chasing mess, but he certainly growls at his own reflection.

Cute, and I love your daughters name for the "other" dog. I think we need some pics though!

That's awesome.

I remember reading somewhere that dogs (and supposedly most animals) aren't self-aware enough to recognize that the reflection is simply that, not another animal. I've heard of exceptions, though, so I'm guessing what I read was a generalization.

Funny

My dog Buddy will wake up from sleeping and start attacking his foot.  I think he caught it once.

I have 2 dogs. Murphy and Fletcher.

Murphy knows it is herself in the mirror cos she would not just walk up and touch noses with another dog whilst wagging her tail.

Fletcher thinks the reflection of Murphy is another dog and growls and snaps when she approaches Murphy from inside the mirror.

She is getting big quickly. Not yet 5 months old, but weighed 39 pounds at the vet visit yesterday. My wife was hoping for a 'medium' sized dog, but I think we're getting a bigger 60+ pound special out of this .

Funny someone should mention the foot chewing -- our fuzzball did that a few times this past weekend. Laying still, suddenly sits up, and lurches over to chomp on her own foot.

My 18 month old Golden Retreiver does the same thing, except she gets made enough to bark at herself.  I really like it when she can't decide how close to get to the mirror/sliding glass door.

that is really funny ~ my dog watches tv and knows when there is another dog or cat on the screen. I didnt think dogs were able to see themselves in reflections or on televsions...so we must have some special babies!!!
