My 10 year old son has a kid's triathlon next Sunday so we went for a "training" ride this morning.

At the end of the ride he he gasps,

"I don't.. (dramatic pant... pant) think... (pant) I have the strength... (pant) to go "down" this hill."

LMFAO!!!!

What did you tell him?

When we hike with our 4 year olds we tell them tired legs are "legs getting stronger".

Nahh.. lol .. I didn't say that.

I smiled.. and said something encouraging like, "You did great!" "You're almost done.".. some kinda niceness encouragement,

But, I was thinking the cupcake thoughts... He's 10 .. when I was his age I had to climb mount Everest on my bike EVERY day in order to get to school.  :-)

Kids take A LOT of patience.

That is a great story.  You will have to put up his post-race picture with his finisher's medal or whatever they give next week.  I bet he smiles a mile wide.

LOL

My 10 year old said almost the same thing at the end of the bike portion of his youth tri this morning.  He didn't have the "strength" to go on, he did it though

I wish I started athletics that early! I didn't get in until my sophomore year in high school from an almost sedentary lifestyle. Thats a great story and good luck on his first race!

Hilarious!  Mine is just starting swim lessons so he can compete next summer.  I can TOTALLY hear him saying that!

Our daughter (who refer to as #3 of 6) has started training with me for a kids tri next year at Sandusky with me. After we got done with our run last night she looks at me and says

"Sheesh, could you go any slower? I've seen rocks go faster than you!"

I couldn't help but laugh.

Yeah, I remember when my son was 12 or 13.  I went for a run (5k) and he asked if he could go along.  He has never run before (or since).  Anyway, after 2 miles, I could see I was holding him back and I said, "just go ahead, I will see you at home".  Well, he finished about 45 seconds ahead of me and then said "Whats the big deal about running?  Its not that hard".

I am hosting an exchange student from North Vietnam this year who wanted to run with me.  I had about 2 hours on my plan the other day and she thought she would run 1 hour with me.  She came downstairs in a cotton tee shirt, regular shorts and a pair of Chucks.  I suggested she try a shorter time so whe wouldn't get hurt in those shoes.....within 1/2 mile she was saying how unbelievably long the run was and how hard it was.  She gallo-walked the remainder of 1 mile and I ran another 9 solo.  Just makes me pause thinking we do this so naturally now and in some parts of the world it is not even a thought.
