...

I never said 20%.  There is a social custom with going to a restaurant and Sonic is one of those that tips are appreciated and expected.  It's an extra dollar or less for crying out loud.  I stand by my statement that these threads expose the cheapskates.  If you don't wan to tip go through the traditional drive thru that many Sonic's have or go to McDonald's.

These thread come up and they usually have many with your attitude of "I don't owe them anything"... life is to short to be a douche and probably get your food sneezed in... trust me that does happen.

This makes no sense at all. If the reason to tip is that the staff is underpaid, then the staff is underpaid. Whether the person skated out to my car or just passed my food through the window doesn't affect how they are paid. I might agree with the "go to McD's" approach, since no one tips at McD's at all, but as the discussion above with going to a traditional restaurant and getting the food "to go" indicates, you should still tip or not based on the restaurant, not whether you ate it there or at home (or in your car, like some kind of animal).

according to a google search, the window guy gets min. wage, the carhops get server wage.  i don't know WHY, but that is how it is done.

These threads always bring out the cheapskates that try to rationalize it to themselves whey they are cheap.

Next thread will be "do you tip a bartender, he just pours a beer like a Mc Donald's worker?"

It's a dollar people.  Does it really make or break you budget if you give them an extra dollar?  If so, perhaps rice and beans is more appropriate and not Sonic.

Yes, I worked for tips in my youth and am slightly biased but I can see that many here did not.

If I tipped 20% at my Sonic visit it would have been > $5 (large order with two hungry sons and myself) which I just didn't think was appropriate...As I said in my initial post, I told the car hop to keep the coins and I gave her a buck as well.

I feel bad for anyone being underpaid for what they do however I don't owe them anything... I "owe" my tip based on the level of service I get with my meal...

You're wrong to label people cheap simply because they don't tip the way you do..

You choose to be ignorant and only look at things from your view as a former server.  I think most people who actually read the posts and try to understand the points made would understand my comment about "not owing them anything" was from the perspective that I don't owe them a substantial tip to make up the difference simply because their employer doesn't pay them enough...

Tips are based on the level AND quality of service, to say it's a social custom makes you even more ignorant..

The guy at the airport who takes my bags at the curb.....I give him a few bucks too.  I can't even say why I do (other than I don't want to listen to my wife berate me if I don't)....they get paid crap, I get paid enough to enjoy more things than they do....a few bucks makes no difference to me.  If enough people like me throw a few bucks their way it makes a difference to them....I get to be part of that. (supposedly, my karma benefits from this type of thing......beats me)

I already told you my wife was a nut, I can't help that she's rubbed off on me.

OK, I admit it, I tip well so there is peace in my home. Laughing

That guy deserves a tip, and its customary.  Tipping the cab driver -- customary.  I would even tip the guy in the bathroom at a fancy restaurant who hands you a towel.

But Sonic??  I'm still failing to see it.  I probably never will.  Its a good thing I don't eat at Sonic.

Once again- I am total agreement with you ( or your wife-hehe). I guess I am a nut too. It makes me happy to tip these people so I guess that's the main reason I do it, and because I am blessed enough to be able to. I too just think it's good Karma.

Now please don't anyone think I mean that if you don't tip like I do, you deserve or will have bad karma.

That's true for ANY server at any restaurant that makes server wage, btw. It's figured over the week, though, and not on a day to day basis (if I recall correctly...it's ultra-rare for most servers to NOT make well over minimum wage for the week).
