Age Group Rank = 1/11
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the hotel next to the course, so that made race morning real easy. Woke up and got everything prepared in the room before heading to transition. Ate a bar and had some water. Also ate a perpetum solid about 20 mins before the start.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 31m 49s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall the swim went well. The first 75 yards or so was a run/wade to the first buoy, then swim acutally started. Going out I tried to keep a steady pace and was perhaps a little too conservative. After the turn we were swimming into the sun which made navigation a little tricky but I was able to pick up the pace a bit and finish with a decent time.
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace for the first half.
Transition 1
  • 03m 24s
Comments:

T1 time includes about a 1/4 mile run from the beach up to the new transition area. I got to my spot quickly and had a pretty efficient transition.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Bike
  • 2h 45m 33s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.30 mile/hr
Comments:

As with the swim, I tried to set an even pace early to allow for a strong push coming home. First six miles or so are gradually uphill and with the headwind seemed slow. Once I got past the olympic turn I fet like things evened out and I held a pretty steady cadence the rest of the way. The 3/4 mile long hill after the turn was tough but climbing out from the dam wasn't as bad as I was told. The last 20K were downhill with a tailwind which helped me get prepared for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Longer trainign rides as a faster pace so that I can go out quicker.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Felt like I took my time getting my socks and shoes on but overall not a bad transition.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 1h 49m 33s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

The plan was to run the entire thing, trying to stay as close to 8:30/mi as possible. Going out I felt strong and pretty much stayed that way the entire run, never going over 8:29/mi. Wish that I had kept something in the tank for the last mile as it woulf have been nice to kick it up at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Just have to up the pace in the training runs to get quicker.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran back to the hotel room and got the camera to snap a couple photos of my wife as she finished.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First event at this distance, I was a little too reserved on the first half of the swim and bike.

Event comments:

I will be back next year!
