Overall Rank = 82/257

Age Group Rank = 7/20
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am. Had a piece of toast and a banana. Drank a small cup of coffee on the drive to the race. Also sipped water until the race started
Event warmup:

Some stretching and light jogging. Swam a couple of hundred yards before the swim start.
Swim
  • 42m
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

Actual swim was good - if I had listened closely during the pre-race announcement I would not have gone off course and known that we had to exit the water and re-enter. Lost about 2 mins - totally preventable.
What would you do differently?:

Pay closer attention during pre-race briefing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Good transition. Made a conscious decision to not rush and put on socks. Still a decent T1 time.
What would you do differently?:

Not much - no snags - T1 went as planned.
Bike
  • 2h 52m 23s
  • 57.4 miles
  • 19.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice bike course. Rolling / flat as expected, so 57 miles of pretty much non-stop pedaling. The skies opened up at about mile 7 and it poured for about 30-40 mins. Eventually it stopped and dried up. Also, the wind picked up as expected. The last 10 miles the wind was kicking pretty good. I was happy with my decision to stick with my regular wheels and tires as I saw many changing flats, regular tires had more grip in the rain, and people with rear discs were getting blown around by the wind. 20 mph avg was as planned - not too hard...except when riding into the wind - but tried to keep cadence up then.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Very smooth T2 - 16th overall without much effort.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 2h 16m 58s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt ok at first - did an 8:17 for the first mile. Everything was downhill after that. Pace slowed each mile until mile 9 when I blew up. Lungs seized and I had to walk. Miles 9 through 12.5 were walking and doing the "old man shuffle". Was able to muster enough to "run" the last .6.
What would you do differently?:

Have to start the run much slower and only increase speed at the end if possible. Wind and heat took more out of me than I realized. Need to work on this for longer races.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a couple of Coke's (helps me a lot after a long race) and ate a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to pace better on the run.

Event comments:

Plenty of water on the run, but another water stop on the bike would be nice. The race was really well run with a good number of volunteers.
