Swim
Comments: Much more difficult than I had anticipated. I was hit many times by other athletes until after the first turn. What would you do differently?: Swam breaststroke to help with sighting and breathing, but would have been better off using freestyle and being more streamlined. Transition 1
Comments: Went well, but lost some time putting on a shirt, socks and shoes. Bike
Comments: This was only the second time I had ridden a bike in the last decade and the hills drained my energy quickly. My bike was purchased from Walmart a few weeks prior to the race and I rode 8 miles of the course one weekend just to get acquainted with it. What would you do differently?: I only trained on a stationary bike and would probably have liked to have more road experience. Also, getting my bike fitted to my height may have been a good idea in retrospect. Transition 2
Comments: This transition actually went well. I had been practicing it by hopping onto a treadmill immediately and running for a little while after every stationary workout. Run
Comments: I was still unable to run for the full distance at the time of the race so I kept a close eye on the digital display of my watch. I would jog for 40 seconds then walk for 20 and continued that pattern for the duration of the run. What would you do differently?: Just needed more training time to drop weight and increase endurance. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: More training time would be very beneficial. I went from overweight, no exercise, and a desk job to a triathlon in 6 weeks. Last updated: 2012-09-21 12:00 AM
