Hadley Township - BIG FISH, Michigan
United States
3 Disciplines
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 19m 41s
Overall Rank = 42/158
Age Group = 35 - 39
Age Group Rank = 6/20
Pre-race routine:

Up early gathered up all the gear. Did not sleep that well the night before my first tri.
Event warmup:

Walking around, putting on the wetsuit. I figured that the slow swim would warm me up sufficiently
Swim
  • 12m 2s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started near the back and stayed there. This was basically my first time with the wetsuit it felt kind of restricting, and I am not sure if I would have been better off w/out it. Did a lot of breast stroke, but people near me were doing free and not going any faster.
What would you do differently?:

More swimming for me! I'm sure lessons are in my future.
Transition 1
  • 04m 31s
Comments:

Really slow - I did not stress this prior to the event and really took my time - but noticed everyone who finished ahead of me spent at least 2- 2:30 less in the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Get in and get out. I realize my little rests may have helped a bit but I don't think I would have performed much different out on the course had I hustled through.
Bike
  • 37m 15s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 19.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I think the bike is my strength. After a poor swim and slow transition passed quite a few people. Probably could have had a better mph but got stuck behind a cement mixer for a while, and it seemed like the first and last mile were single file in and out of the park. Brutal hill for me at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Try and drink a little water. I only have been getting on my bike about once per week. Messed up shifting on the big downhill - could not get back to the big ring and did not take advantage of the hill. A little more time in the saddle will help.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Again took my time in the transition went into my bag to find my visor which I failed to lay out. Also needed some water and stood there while I drank the whole glass.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster - better prepared. Possibly bring a bottle of water w/ me.
Run
  • 24m 4s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt like I was running for an hour and it would never end. MEt my goal of < 8 min miles.
What would you do differently?:

I need to train in the heat. Up to this point I have always trained early in the morning which makes the 90 degree days difficult.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Lots of water and gatorade. Some stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lame effort in the transition area. I will hustle through next time.

Event comments:

I thought it was well run. The only things I did not like were the single file cycling exiting and entering the park. I also almost ran people over during the run because the station was only on one side.

Check out my first race. Even though I competed in the Clyde division (and won, woohoo ), I put my results in for where I would have been in my age group so I would have people ahead of me for comparison purposes. I nearly died on the course form the heat but had a blast and now want to do the Motor City next Sunday.
