Comments: I did no specific race preparation for this event. I was just hoping to see what I could do with just my base fitness from HIM racing. My plan was to start at 6:45s and then negative split the back half around 6:35s. I thought at best I may be able to break 1:27 but more realistically sub 1:28. Nutrition: One GU gel taking half at mile 6 and half at mile 8. Water at 3 aid stations. I started at the front of the race and hung with a rather large group thru the first mile and then settled in with a teammate for the first 3 miles before he dropped back. I was ticking them off right where I wanted to be and feeling pretty good. The 1st place female was right in front of me and paced with her until mile 5 and kept right on schedule with pacing still feeling very good. We turned into a neighborhood and I passed her and looked ahead to the next rabbit. I popped half a gel here prior to the aid station. I was in 6th place at this point I think. I was able to hold that position for quite awhile. I took the second half of my gel prior to the 8 mile aid station. Their were a couple of tough hills as we got into Fruitport at the farthest point of the course which resulted in the higher time splits. I was able to handle them pretty well though. At about mile 9 is when a group of 3 people came up on me. Two of them passed me and then the other dropped back. They were just what I needed to pick the pace up and I ticked off 6:31 and felt effortless. I was able to pass the guy that had been running ahead of me soon after. There was another guy up ahead that I appeared to really be gaining on but ran out of real estate ultimately. There were 3 guys that crossed within a minute of me so I could have easily been top 5 with some specific prep. I was really happy with how my legs felt and my effort from mile 10-13.1 where I thought I may struggle. I am very happy with this race especially for my first standalone 13.1 road race. A PR! Garmin data: Time: 1:27:34 Distance: 13.18 miles Pace: 6:38 min/mile AHR: 171 6:42 AHR:168 6:42 AHR:178 6:43 AHR:176 6:38 AHR:175 6:40 AHR:174 6:40 AHR:174 6:41 AHR:173 6:43 AHR:170 6:45 AHR:170 6:49 AHR:167 6:31 AHR:167 6:37 AHR:167 6:22 AHR:168 5:50 AHR:174 What would you do differently?: Nothing. I am happy that I stuck with my race plan and it produced a good result. Post race
Warm down: Rachael & Keelyn were there and chatted with them. I waited for results to come out and saw I was 8th OA and 1st AG in a large field which was cool. What limited your ability to perform faster: Specific race preparation would have helped but the HIM and racing 3 weeks prior again I was more in recovery mode. Event comments: Great race course and volunteers. I will come back! Last updated: 2012-09-18 12:00 AM

Got up at 6:00 am and had a muffin. Made a bottle of gatorade to sip on and also a bottle of water. Left home about 7:00 for the 10 minute trip to the race site. Picked up my packet and got ready to go.
Did a short 0.5 mile warmup with some strides, took a bathroom break, and then popped a gel about 20 minutes prior to the start.
