Pre-race routine:

Got to the race at 6:30, parking was excellent, so I got set up in no time. Got marked up, ate a banana and a granola bar, with a little water. Just before the race I took a Gu.
Event warmup:

I ran for about 10 minutes or so with Nate, then swam for about 5 minutes.
Swim
  • 19m 39s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

My best swim ever, by far! This is the first time I've ever averaged under 2. The suit helped a lot, but my conditioning was great. I got tired, but never exhausted, and my heart rate stayed normal. I wandered a little, but not too badly. This swim was a 10/10.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, this was really my best case scenario.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Not too bad, it was a quick start on the bike, so not much running. The start line was the timing mat, then immediately up a steep hill. I forgot to take my earplugs out for about 3-4 minutes, but it didn't make a difference.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to focus on going quickly, I think if I just practiced my transitions, I'll be ok. This was also my first wetsuit transition, so no real complaints.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 51s
  • 21 miles
  • 18.85 mile/hr
Comments:

A good ride, not necessarily great. I would really loved to have averaged 19, but those hills were something. I just need to keep riding hard.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, that's about it.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Again, a good transition. I could shave more time if I can get a pair of shoes I can run in without socks.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 31m 34s
  • 4.35 miles
  • 07m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

The course has to be short, there's no way I ran it in 7.25/mile. I was watching my watch and making sure to maintain under 8.30. I guess I'll take it though. I also don't see how it can be short, since it's a straight shot with no real turns...I'm happy overall.
What would you do differently?:

I feel like I can go harder, I just don't know how hard I can maintain really pushing it.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank half a Coke, ate a banana, walked around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really

Event comments:

A great course, excellent parking, good food after (except for limited veggie options for those so inclined). I really loved the dam, both riding and running. And the swim was great; the water was clear and the perfect temperature. I'll definitely do this again next year!

Very nice race!  Learning 'how hard can I push?" is tough.  I know I've gone too easy and too hard.  But what is 'just right?'  Keeping working at it.  You are doing great!
