Pre-race routine:

Fruit bowl for breakfast. Ate a GU 15 minutes prior to the start.
Event warmup:

Quick run with Jamie and then a quick swim.
Swim
  • 16m 98s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

My first open water swim. The wet suit helped due to the bouyancy. Got off track a little bit due to the wind and had to fight against that a bit to stay on course. Overall, I think I did well!
What would you do differently?:

Site more often to stay on course.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

First time using bike shoes instead of mousetrap pedals so I had to futz around with those. I was able to click in quickly though so I was happy with that since in previous races I always had issues getting my foot into the strap.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on getting the wetsuit off, but everything else felt okay.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 8s
  • 21 miles
  • 19.05 mile/hr
Comments:

I can tell I lost some fitness due to my inactivity when I was resting my knee. I need to keep it up over these next 2 weeks to be better prepared for the REV 3 on Oct 14th. My backup air pump came loose and was clicking against my pedal. It didn't hinder anything, but was annoying as hell. I also dropped my dang water bottle after trying to put it back in its holster.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure everything is secure before my race next time. Also be more careful when handling the water bottle.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Felt pretty good. I was out of the bike shoes and into my running shoes pretty quickly. My transition spot was at the far end of the area so I had to run that distance in the bike shoes which was sort of annoying.
What would you do differently?:

At some point I might try to practice taking my feet out of my shoes before reaching transition.
Run
  • 30m 55s
  • 4.35 miles
  • 07m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Had a good sub 8 minute pace for the first couple of miles but then got a bit of a cramp and a bit winded so slowed it down to 8:30ish. My knee was fine the whole time, so I'm really glad for that! Again, I wish I hadn't neglected my fitness while resting my knee. I could have biked more often to keep my lungs strong.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. I felt good despite bad preparation.
Post race
Warm down:

Banana and a juice. Took a roller to my IT band because it started to feel a little funky a few minutes after the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Again, lack of training while resting the knee. My own fault, I should have spent more time on the bike or in the pool.

Event comments:

This was a great race. Location was awesome, parking was stellar. The only complaint I had was the lack of nutritious Vegetarian post food options. It was suggested I have an iceberg lettuce and salsa wrap... Oh well, Jamie and I got Chipotle afterwards which helped a ton :) Got to meet Michael and that was great. Even watched him receive his award for making podium! Hope to run into him more in the future!

Great race, Nate!  You are on a good path.  Those little things (feet out of pedals, getting rid of the pump, etc.) add up.  Start working on them and your fitness and I predict you will move up quite a bit.  You are clearly a natural swimmer, so use that to your advantage!

It was good to meet you today.  Rest well, then step on it for Rev3!
