Ok today official starts my training for my first sprint. It is 7 months away but I was wondering...What is some of the biggest stumbling blocks that you run into during training?

Right now its football. Saturday morning bricks are a little shorter. sunday morning recovery runs just turn into plain recovering from the night before. and then nfl starts and the weekend is wasted. I hate it when my social life gets in the way of my training.

Be consistent.  If you start missing or skipping workouts it's like you're starting over all the time.

Good luck.

For me it's balancing my workouts with family and work. It's tough when you get a call and have to haul out of town for a couple days. Now the wifey is preggo with twins, so come spring it's gonna be tough to crank out a long bike or run when that's the only time you have to SLEEP for that 24 hr period.

So living in FL, it's not weather. Being close to the beach, I can go do ow swims all the time. But I have to fight for a couple hours a day to workout. Well, that and get up early in the morning.

For me, its been 1 nagging injury after the next. Train hard, but constantly listen to your body. And as above, train consistently, the gains will come. Good luck and stick around. Great advice around here(notnecessarily me!).

Yeah I find it is family and work that is the biggest roadblocks so far.

Katetri...I have been riding road bikes for a little over a year now besides that it was mostly resistant training because I was corrections officer...But after  a back fusion and 3 knee surgeries it has been a climb back to a good weight.

I think many times, stumbling blocks are actually symptoms of trying to do too much too soon.  The results of over training will be different for a lot of us, but for many - it's wanting to outwork our current level of fitness that causes the tendinitis, pulled muscle, plantar fasciitis, etc.

Take the seven months you have and build up slowly - taking time to remain at certain levels to get yourself used to the training and the speed will come as a result of being able to train more consistently.

It's that and the whole "it's football season" thing.

Twomark I have to agree with you about going slowly and staying where I need to get use to it. Today I went for a 12 minute swim, I kicked my butt. I feel great but I was panting when I was done. I was using muscles I haven't used in years. I think I will be staying on that first week for a few weeks. Plus I will be so sore tomorrow!!!!!

Adding too much mileage too soon.  Build slowly to avoid injury.  I've injured myself twice adding too much bike/run mileage too quickly.  You have plenty of time!

mine is finding balance between work and home.  i went through a divorce this year and trying to find time to train was a lot harder than i thought it would be.  i wanted to spend more time with my son since i didn't get to see him all the time and that will trump working out every time.  my busy time at work started about a month ago and will continue through the end of the year, so my totals for september pretty much suck.

i had a goal of making a podium finish at any one of my 6 races this year (6th is coming up on sunday) and i did finish 3rd back on race #2.  But i wasn't really satisfied with that because there were only 6 people in my AG.  i just didn't have enough time to train this year.

maybe next year i'll have more of my life figured out and how to balance better.

Injuries and sickness.  You always have to work slowly because the most important thing is mitigating injury risk.  The other issue is sickness; when you train on the razor its real easy to miss your calorie intake or catch a bug.

Doing too much too soon, ie. not ramping up correctly.

Just because you CAN run 10 k doesn't mean you SHOULD run 10 k.

Find a plan and stick with it. It's tested on many levels.

That's a good idea.  My post was just as much a speech to myself than anyone else - I need reminding constantly to build slowly.

Let us know how it goes.
