Subject: Best hill cycling practice in Twin Cities?
It became evident to me during my last tri that I need to work on attacking hills when biking. I was able to keep my own on the hills, but after the hills I would have people passing me. I suspect it is due to my legs having to pace themselves after the fatigue caused by the hills.

Anyone have a favorite area in the twin cities where you can take on some nice hills with a road bike? I'm on the MInneapolis / West side, but am willing to go anywhere for the right workout.

Thanks.

Welcome to BT?  Where on the west side are you?  I'm in Maple Grove and I often ride west from home.  There aren't a lot of big hills, but there are plenty of steady climbs that make you work.  However, for some real hill work, I am thinking of going east, to ride the course of the Square Lake tri.  I'm racing there in September and it has a reputation for being hilly.

I regularly ride northeast of the metro (north of stillwater by square lake). There are some short climbs, plenty of steady long climbs and rollers out there.

Good stuff.

i do most of my cycling in the city. grand hill, the hill from the exel center up to the cathedral, the hills around the capital to and from the entrance to the gateway. ride from lake como to lake phalen and back has a couple decent climbs.

Climbing Myrtle street west out of Stillwater is also good - it's steep and long.

280th street south of Lakeville - ride south on Cedar until it ends at a T (280th) - new road, little traffic, wide shoulder, long ups and downs.

Word...anything south of County Rd 46, either south on Cedar or south on Pilot Knob will give you your fair share of hills.  Both of these roads are on my typical workout route.  No flat routes...

Thanks.. I have found some good stuff in the western suburbs. The Vinehill Road area has good hills (although Vinehill itself is FULL of potholes) and the whole area around Lotus lake provides some good, long hills. I'll have to go to the southern suburbs sometime... sounds like good hills.

If you're riding in the West Metro, Cty Road 6 from Plymouth to Watertown is excellent. Few lights and wide shoulders are nice along the whole route. Also, very hilly. Cyclists on their TT bikes love it because there are no stops once you get past a certain point.
