Swim
Comments: ran into several people who had completely stopped and were trying to figure out where to go next. Lost swim cap half way through so I had to have lost tons of time right there. /s What would you do differently?: needed more swim training. Had not swam in 3 weeks due to some cuts all over my legs from playing indoor soccer every week. Goal was 30 minutes so i was right there. Transition 1
Comments: Took a little extra time to get everything on. I decided to just go with my tri suit and arm warmers. The arm warmers were difficult to get on while wet. the bike racks were too low for my saddle (6'3") so my bike had shifted and my helmet, bib number, glasses, arms warmers had spread all over the place. What would you do differently?: spend a little time to dry off better before trying to put on arm warmers. Bike
Comments: Hands and feet were very cold during the bike. I had gloves but they are very slick on my aerobars and I didn't feel comfortable riding with them in a group (need to add bar tape to aerobars). Several decent hills. Goal was 1:15 so again pretty close. What would you do differently?: socks and gloves. Transition 2
Comments: Hands and feet were numb. Bike in was steep downhill and didn't feel comfortable trying to get out of shoes while on bike. Had to climb a couple levels in parking lot to rack with cycling shoes on. Had a hard time getting running gear on due to cold hands. Added gloves to go with arm warmers for run. What would you do differently?: gloves during bike would have helped Run
Comments: Legs were on fire almost the whole time. Feet finally thawed out about 2.5 miles in. I had broken my foot at this race the last year it was in Dallas because of the same issue. Couldn't feel my feet during the run and I ended up with a stress fracture. No lingering issues this time and still finished 17 seconds under 1 hour goal! What would you do differently?: Do more hill training. I had heard the run course was difficult and I tried to add some hills into my training but it was even worse than I expected. Post race
Warm down: find food, and my wife with my warm clothes. What limited your ability to perform faster: hands and feet were too cold. Event comments: Overall this is a great race. I have done it 3 times (first since it moved to Rockwall). Always good support and lots of volunteers. The first weekend of October is always hit or miss with the weather it seems. Could be anywhere from 40-90 degrees on race day. Last updated: 2012-10-08 12:00 AM
