Mountaindan - 2012-10-13 6:51 AM Would they help with Cramping? I have a tendency to get calf cramps and have tried just about everything?

No.

I am a constant calf cramper, and have gotten cramps while racing in compression sleeves.

I've been seriously thinking of getting a pair for the upcoming season. There are several BT'ers and some non-BT'ers that swear by them.

LOVE 'em.  DH bought some to wear when running to help with shin splints.  They helped him.  I bought some and don;t like running in them but swear by them for recovery.  8 miles or longer and I will wear them.  I vote for the sleeves for the following reasons: 1) can wear under my work clothes and no one is the wiser 2) less laundry 3) I can't sleep in socks but I can sleep in the sleeves.  I did 17 miles yesterday and was feeling some twinges in my calves.  Showered and put on my sleeves and life was so much better.

aren't diabetic socks designed to do the same thing for a tenth of the cost?

I will occasionally use my 2XU during an actual run. I like the feel of the compression around my lower leg. I have also had issues with shin splints that eventually sparked into a tibial stress fracture, so Iam always cautious when it comes to my lower leg soreness. The so called "slapping" affect of the muscle, tendons, ect that can lead to shin splint issues, i feel is decreased by the compression provided by the sleeves during running. Keep in mind this was a couple of years ago when I was a major HEEL STRIKER!

I have since adjusted my running/form and now that I use Newton running shoes, I feel more tightness in my calves and achilles area. I currently use COMPRESSPORT calf sleeves mainly for recovery. They are really comfortable, and they seem to be the best as far as length for my 6' 3" tall frame. Not to mention they come in a great variety of cool colors!

I don't own a pair of athletic compression socks, just a pair of those airplane-type socks, which I wear on airplanes. Haven't felt the need as my feet/calves typically don't get sore during/after long workouts or races.

"Athletic Compression Socks" - IMO - total marketing scam.  $17.95 at my local drug store for a pair of 20-30 mmHG black compression socks.  I would be willing to bet I get the same relief as the $60 CEP's or the $35 Nikes - unless there is some sort of magical power in the florescent yellow or the Nike "swoosh"

Mine are black - I use them for recovery, and I swear by them for that purpose.

They do the same thing- but not at a tenth of  the cost.  Maybe 1/3 of the cost?

That said I do have compression hose (for diabetics and flying on airplanes) that I wear after long races or long workouts and they help a lot.  I'm significantly less sore when I wear them.  I bought them for a long plan ride that I took a few months after I was hit by a car- to reduce my chance of getting blood clots.  Then I got into triathlons and lucky for me, I can wear them for recovery too!

I have heard that athletic-recovery leggings/ socks are woven to specifically support muscles- but I think the drugstore ones work fine.  But they definitely don't look cool.

As already stated, they're the same thing diabetics use. I got a discount on CEP socks and calf sleeves through ProMotive.com, so I didn't pay $60. I have used 2XU calf sleeves before. Some folks like that brand, but I didn't. I'll use them to keep my shins warmer than they would otherwise be, but I don't notice a difference in other areas. The CEP calf sleeves do seem to help me. I'm a little more prone to shin splints than most folks, and I do believe they sleeves and socks have helped a little. I won't say they're the best thing since Glenmorangie scotch, but I do use them quite a bit and I'm very happy with them.
