Detroit Free Press Marathon
40F / 4C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 45m 4s
Overall Rank = 531/9345
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 22/1001
Pre-race routine:

Ate my oatmeal in the car, drank water.
Event warmup:

Lightly jogged the 3/4 mile from where we parked to the race start.
Run
  • 1h 45m 4s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

The first several miles were good as I thought I may just be able to pull off a PR from my fastest 7:47 pace. Then as I got about half way, I slowed a little and hoped to just break an 8 minute pace. By the final third of the race, my low back was hurting and my hip flexors felt like they were going to give out. I had a feeling I wouldn't break 1:45 but did my absolute best to finish as strong as possible.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think I could've done much differently. With all the minor overuse injuries, my kinetic chain is just not functioning 100%. I did PR for this particular course but overall I was slightly disappointed.
Post race
Warm down:

Tried to hustle back to the car, now slightly damp and freezing. Wished we hadn't parked almost a mile away!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injuries, head congestion.

Well done. I get the impression that running up over that huge bridge and then coming back in the heat and humidity of the tunnel makes the International Half a little bit more of a beast. Way to hang in there and turn in a great time.

Yes, the US-only half was very enjoyable. Essentially a flat 13.1 miles and perfect weather yesterday.
