Subject: IMFL pre race prep with Augusta 70.3 question
I'm signed up for 2013 IMFL, starting training after a ultra marathon in Jan. Looking at a few prep races prior to it. Curious if people think that the Augusta 70.3 is to close or is it OK to do that race and then start my taper?

Haven't checked the dates yet but I did Augusta and IMFL the last 2 years. Last year was closer than I liked as 1 more week would have been ideal.

But I still had time for 1 more long week before taper. It is a great race and Id do it again but twice is enough. Too many other races out there. Austin this year for fall 70.3.

Enjoy

I've signed up for IMFL (my first full) and I am planning to do Augusta as well.  I did Augusta this year and it's an awesome venue.  My friend that raced IMFL this year also did Augusta as a "warm up" race.

Depending on where you live, I would do Outer Banks HIM.  Course wise it is much closer to IMFL than Augusta. I have done both but did Outer Banks as my tune up for IMFL.  OBX is a sound swim, flat bike with wind, pancake flat run.

Time wise, OBX was a week before Augusta and was plenty of time to recover. Unless you go at the HIM at 100% effort, you should be good to start back training by tuesday.

I actually live in Atlanta, so Augusta from a distance standpoint is more appealing 2 hrs vs 9hrs. If that extra week and course similarity is worth it I could go Outer Banks but the trip would be much rougher.

I did Augusta 2012.  Plan to do it in again 2013 as well as IMFL.  Look at Gulf Coast Tri 70.3 in May in PCB.  It's a sneak peek of the IMFL course.  The swim will be worse.

I'm using Don Fink's competitive 30-week plan for IMAZ and Augusta HIM is only one week later than he has planned in his training plan for your HIM leading into Arizona. If you are in the area, you can't beat Augusta HIM for cost, quality of the course, and ideal timing for the late season full IMs.

If you can do some ocean swimming else where in the summer, I would pass on a 9 hour drive. Getting in some ocean OWS is pretty important but you can do that on vaca.  We drove 6 hours from CLT but we made long weekend of and used it as a mini-vacation with a HIM in the middle. Augusta is anything but a vacation spot but is a good race (but the swim is indeed a joke, especially compared to an IM ocean swim).
